anyone from a third world country is welcome, they get a house, a cheque once a week, student fees paid for the lot.

Thats why the UK is a shit hole now!

How are these foreigners able to do this? I'm honestly curious. They have to be doing it legal or else they wouldn't get aid from the gov't.[/quote]

Obviously some forget those stamps on foreign passports put in by UK authorities saying clearly:

"prohibited from paid or UNPAID employment",

at least Cyprus allows some PAID work of the type a student might take. If it is matter of educational work, then it can obviously be unpaid, something prohibited in the UK for non EU residents.

Perhaps, but full-time students in the UK from non-EU countries are permitted to work up to a certain number of hours per week.

In my days (late eighties) I received a government tertiary study allowance (as a permanent citizen of Australia) which helped a lot, so I find it hard to believe that people come here broke to study and expect to be able to pay for it and their stay through part-time work that hasn’t been secured yet! :?

Well in the US, int'l students are only allowed to work off campus. They cannot get a job outside school grounds legally. So if they work for the school, they just get minimum wage. However if you get a graduate assistantship at some schools, tuition is free and they still pay you a stipend. If you needed to work while in school, you should have researched whether this is possible and feasible before coming here though.
