they die in a way of perfomance wise. They take like 3 minutes to start up. Just a pain in the ass. I would go desktop always. Nothing special about laptops

Hahahahahaha!

So they didn't fail catastrophically as you claimed then?

That is the problem with making ridiculous claims like that...

The reason PC's have reduced performance after a couple of years is all the shite updates that Micro$oft download onto them... Otherwise, you could simply re-install XP and hey-presto get a brand new machine again...

You notice the performance degradation more on a laptop because they tend to have slower preprocessors (because of battery consumption/heat generation issues) and less memory (for the same reasons).

I have a HP Vectra here that I installed XP on when it first came out (upgraded from NT). At the time it was the most amazing system and I remember thinking that I'd never need to upgrade again. Now it won't even run XP.

Yesterday all my systems downloaded and installed 11 Micro$oft upgrades - it is no wonder that performance degrades so much over time.

Luckily, my desktop PC is a water cooled behemoth with 4Gbytes RAM, multi-core CPU and a SSD so I tend not to notice any speed degradation...

My laptop (which has been scanning old slides and photos all weekend (see other threads) is however not quite so fortunate...

lap tops are good for traveling and being lazy around the house and in the gardern being able to use wifi still but specs are always 100 times better on the desktop

FragnaticDeath made claims that he couldn't substantiate...

A desktop will always offer more performance - but then you can't pop it in a bag and take it with you... or use it on-site with no access to electrical power...

Horses for courses is the English phrase that covers it I think...

A laptop with me would easily die in a few months from heavy usage. Plus if i want to watch movies in a plane or on the road i use my iphone. I am complete in everyway

but anyhow fig head the computer geek knows best :)

For multimedia usage?

What a ridiculous statement!

Laptops exist for their portability - that is why they feature batteries...

As for reliability - I have two that I've used on a regular basis for years - travelling back and forth to the UK (god knows how many times one of them has been through the X-Ray machine) and out on customer sites... no problems with reliability...

And a laptop wouldn't "easily die in a few months from heavy usage" any more than a desktop would...

lol! ok whatever makes you feel better. So let me ask you this what is the main enemy of a computer?

Fig head!

Many years ago I was invited to a presentation of the Apple Lisa - they wanted the company I worked for (Thorn EMI) to sell it...

It was amazing! The graphics where unbelievable (compared to the CP/M machines we were selling at the time) and that mouse thing was just incredible!

But then the guy insisted on demonstrating the multi-tasking capabilities by getting it to print something (on a matrix printer) while we used it.

Epic FAIL! It ground to a halt and we walked away from the 'opportunity'...

The rest is of course history...
