College student needs a Cyprus/Nicosia resident's help!

Postby weerezivy » Thu Dec 10, 2009 12:02 am

Hello!
My name is Katie, I am from Wisconsin, US!

I am a college student for graphic design. In my typography class we were assigned a project that focuses on a specific City. I was assigned Nicosia.

Part of my assignment requires me to communicate with someone, or multiple people from Cyprus!

We are making a book with images of the city/country, as well as poems and other random text. I chose a Cypriot poet, and I will be using his poetry for my book. I have found beautiful images of Cyprus on Flickr.com

I just need to speak with someone that lives there. I need a first-person opinion on Nicosia, anything at all about it. Its geography, government, culture, music, poetry, food- ANYTHING! I just need to fulfill this part of my assignment, lol.

Any and all replies are EXTREMELY appreciated. If there is any possible favor I can do in return, let me know. I am a photographer as well as a designer and can create something for you, such as a logo or just a cool image of your name or something. Anything I can do to re-pay the favor.

I can be reached here or through my email, [email protected]

I hope to learn more about gorgeous Nicosia/Cyprus! I wish I could visit!

Thank you SO MUCH!

Hi Katie and welcome to CF.

Few things from someone who doesn't live in CY ....

Most importantly Nicosia is a Divided City. Part held, since '74, by the Occupation Army of Turkey. No academic project can be complete without a ref to this. You can find out more on this here ....

http://www.cyprus-forum.com/viewforum.php?f=8

Now contrary to world-wide belief, Nicosia isn't the CY Capital City. This honour goes to the CY Republic of North London, home to the real CYs, economic refugees (with a couple of generations of offspring) from the old villages from the '50s on.

As a reasonably frequent visitor to Nicosia, can tell you Nicosia is a dump (no offence to other dumps), particularly its southern suburbs. What little town planning exists, is ignored. The built environment is a disaster that has taken years of careful planning to achieve. Nothing ever seems to get finished. Nicosians treat their open places and rivers as dumps.

The place is like a 3rd World Shanty Town, but one built from reinforced concrete and .... funny thing .... am really quite fond of the place.

:D

In this "Third World Shanty Town" the exiled Bill refers to, we live in detached houses of over 200SqM with swimming pools. We also drive to work in our Merceds and BMWs.

In the "CY Republic of North London" on the other hand they live in little boxes all stuck together of less than 80SqM and they can't go swimming because the local council has closed the municipal pool. As for going to work they have to crowd on to buses or into the underground, that is if they are not benefits cheats who only need to walk to the nearest pub.

Focus on the venetian walls. The old walled city of Nicosia is encircled by strong fortress walls built by the Venetians in the 16th century, the enchanting old city is scattered with buildings and monuments of historical interest as well as little shops, cafés and tavernas

here are some links.:
By the way they've given you the most industrial/ urbanized part of the Island-my sympathies. The Turkish Army should have taken the all of it. (just kidding)
