WASHINGTON - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has asked American President Barack Obama for more direct involvement from the USA on the Cyprus issue.
He called for further involvement in the process of the guarantor powers and timeframe for the negotiations until March suggesting that this could be achieved through attending a series of four meetings in Greece, Turkey, and the USA under the auspices of the UN.
This request was put to Obama on Monday during a meeting in the Whitehouse also attended by American Vice President Joe Biden and Turkish Foreign Minister Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
Speaking after the meeting the Turkish FM said he wished for the negotiations to be complete by March. Referring to the ongoing peace negotiations taking place in Cyprus with UN Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alexander Downer Erdogan said: “they must accelerate.”
