Premier Erdogan says withdrawal of troops from Cyprus is out of question.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that withdrawal of troops from Cyprus was out of the question.

"Those who suggested this proposal to us, should first ask this question to the South" Erdogan told at a news confernece in Willard Interncontinental Hotel after his meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama.

"I had the opportunity to discuss with Mr. Obama ways to carry further the model partnerhip between our countries, including economic, scientific, technological, military and political relations. The U.S. party assigned its two high ranking officials and Turkey assigned Deputy Prime minister Ali Babacan and State Minister for Foreign Trade and Economy Zafer Caglayan to boost relations. So that we will be able to take more determined steps for the next process. They will also discuss the steps to boost the performance in foreign trade," Erdogan said.

Erdogan said they discussed the issues related to fight against terrorism. "We have reaffirmed the understanding that 'separatist terrorist organization is the common enemy of the United States, Turkey and Iraq' We will continue cooperation in all issues," he said.

"Another important issue is the developments particularly in Iraq. We focussed on the nuclear program in Iran, and developments in Afghanistan. Turkey has offered to provide training to Afghan army in a training facility to be build in Afghanistan."

Erdogan expressed readiness to contribute to the formation of a police force in case an agreement could be reached.

Answering a question on whether Turkey demanded the U.S. to rid Mount Quandl of PKK terrorists, Erdogan said the U.S. President offered further support and the two countries would continue to actively share intelligence against PKK, noting however that they did ot discuss any new measures during the meeting.

Answering a question, Premier Erdogan said rumors about plans to withdraw Turkish Troops from Cyprus to be deployed in Afghanistan was completely false, noting that such a thing was out of the question.

Well the cat is well and truely out of the bag now.

They have no intention of removing their troops and HAD no intention of removing them with the AP either. So much for supporting the Cyprus Talks. Total farce, they are just a bunch of liars, cheats and crooks.

VP, Yfred, Insan et al, are you listenting, looks like you are not the ones to decide and thats official now.

Pres X should just back out now stating Turkish intransigence AGAIN.

I think you may be taking this out of context. Turkey already has troops (about 1750 in number) in Afghanistan and has pledged more. Turkey has hundreds of thousands of troops in its army and IF it sends any more, it is doubtful it will be more than another few thousand. Where these troops come from (Turkey or Cyprus) is irrelevant and the fact that there are supposed to be about 30,000 Turkish troops in TRNC, sending a few thousand from here to Afghanistan makes not much difference to the balance of power in Cyprus. Perhaps Erdogans suggestion that this question should have been asked of the South was aimed at the fact that RoC has yet to send any troops to Afghanistan(?)

Damn press. To me what it says is that the troops willNOT be withdrawn from Cyprus to be redeployed in Afganistan.
This is not the same as saying," the troops will NEVER leave Cyprus".

Pure sensationalism if you ask me.

I think the door for ther TA is still open.

Deniz, sorry to burst your bubble, but this is what he said and it is also the heading:

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that withdrawal of troops from Cyprus was out of the question.

Afganistan or not, Turkey has no intention of leaving Cyprus, well not by talks anyhow.

We need another way to extract them!

I'm sorry but you are quoting the article, not what Erdogan said. Read the article again and what Erdogan said is in parenthesis, the rest is what the article said he said. Not the same thing at all.
