Ghurbeties?

Postby Talisker » Sun Dec 06, 2009 1:45 am

I understand the Ghurbeties are Muslim gypsies in Cyprus who speak their own language (Ghurbetcha). Not easy to find out more about these people - in fact 'Ghurbeties' is a Googlewhack with the single website listed as follows:

Anyone able to provide further information on Ghurbeties?

Older members of the community described their sadness that their children had moved to London, married British partners and now claimed to be "Turkish-Cypriot", rather than Ghurbeti. Linguistically, this younger group has almost entirely "lost" the Khurbetçý language with few recognising any words .

That explains a lot ... especially that hisssing sound he makes.

The Cypriot Roma / Gypsies and the Failure of Education:

This is a comprehensive review providing a lot of useful information about gypsies in Cyprus and basically points out that like many societies Cypriots have a prejudicial 'not in my backyard' attitude to the presence of gypsies - we see exactly the same in the UK.

Yes, everyone only gets interested in gypsies when they appear in their neighbourhood! :? If I recall correctly there is reference to gypsies in Gerald Durrell's books (My family and other animals, Birds, beast and relatives, etc) from 1930s Corfu so guess I shouldn't be surprised to find there are gypsies in Cyprus. I stumbled upon the references when looking for something else last night - late night 'projects' followed up on Sunday morning - just a stalling tactic on my part to prevent me commencing some 'real' work I have to do today. :( Time to drop the gypsy interest.

Wondered if there was now a case for a TTF  - will TCs accept possible claims from Ghurbeties for 'political equality' above minority rights?
