Yes, I had the same culture shock when I moved here... the difference being that in UK people ask because they don't want to feel that they're being underpaid in comparison where as here they're just trying to figure out how high up the status tree you are..
Within 2 hours of moving into my house I was asked... "So how much did you pay for the beach house, what job do you do and how much do they pay you.... oh.. nice car! How much did you pay for that then?.."
But guess you get used to it...
As they say... "When in Rome!!"...
