Yes a Mayan village. Auguacanton is 3 hrs for the Mexico border. In the mountains, very beautiful but VERY VERY poor. The only running water was to a a basin where the ALL the washing was done. The toilet was cement stool sitting over a hole in the ground and a wall that barely covered you bare bottom while sitting there. lol As for the food you had to walk 2 miles to purchase everyday, no ice box to keep it in. Cooking over a wood fire. you only had coffee for dinner. Bathing in a sauna that filled with smoke more than steam. The whole village was about a foot shorter than I so the stares and comments were VERY common. Even though I know spanish it was still very difficult to communicate because many of them spoke dialect instead of Spanish. I enjoyed it and I appreciate what I have more now because of it but it was a very difficult 4 months.

Well those Mayan people were staring at you because u look so different from them. They aren't exposed. They rarely travel because they are poor. Many people don't have tv's. They don't interact much with white people. Cypriots are exposed, but they still do it. Guatemala is a country of extremes. There are a small number of rich people and majority of poor people. Well, it sounds like u took the good from it. :)

FYI, I wasn't just assuming u were white. I wouldn't do that. I saw your pic. :) I kinda know what u mean. I was in Mexico a little while for a Spanish class and I stayed with a Mayan woman. I lived in a city though. I didn't experience anything ruff. Her home looked miniature compare to mines. She was like 4'10" and I'm 6'. Everyone in the neighborhood were also very short and would stare at me for being tall. hehe

Queso is referred to people with lighter skin. They just don't say it in Guatemala. I have been called that a number of times in my childhood.

Oh, I thought that its a Cypriot thing. hehe Yeah, I was raised to never ask someone their salary. You can only bring up that topic when someone tells u how much she/he makes and thats not often. I don't know what my relatives make. Right now I only hang out with Cypriots. They will ask u and tell u how much they make. They have even asked me what I made in the US.
