Provocative symbols

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

My Turkish Cypriot friends are Cypriot first and then anything else. We share the same aspirations for Cyprus and APOEL supporters can stuff their greekness along with similar minded TC's who can stuff their turkishness.

Feel free to feel embarrased. The teams name means Greeks of Nicosia, the constitution allows them to carry Greek flags wherever they like.

So Apoel fans are similar to Glasgow Celtic fans who carry the Irish flag.

I agree entirely with your sentiments.

Cypriot and proud of it!

How about a new year’s resolution to start supporting a REAL Cypriot team as of 2010?

• Adonis Idalion
• Ahyronas Liopetri
• AE Kouklia
• AE Zakaki
• Anagennisi Dherynia
• Chalkanoras Idaliou
• Digenis Oroklini
• Elpida Xylofagou
• ENAD Polis Chrysochou
• ENTHOI Lakatamia
• Ethnikos Assia
• Iraklis Gerolakkos

Who is Elpida? I thought it was a female name? Perhaps a lady footballer.

I played a couple of games at ethnikos assias...as Greek as they get.

APOEL is one of the oldest institutions established here in Cyprus. Its currently representing this tiny nation is the creme of European football and not doing too badly. If you ahve an issue with the flags the supporters carry then I suggest you start banning Apollon Limassol, Anorthosis, AE Paphos, EN Paralimni, Ethnikos Achnas and Omonoia Aradipou for their greek flag carrying fans. You then move on to ban Nea Salamina, omonoia, Alki and Ermis Aradipou for their Soviet flag (sometimes turkish) carrying fans and enjoy your championship with AEL and Apop Peyias.

I don't care what a lot of you think: I still think that the TRNC flag is one of the better looking national flags and it looks great flying from a flagpole.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. To me that flag screams out 'Yavruvatan'. What a patronising concept! Moreover, why, if the TRNC is supposedly an independent state, is that flag invariably flown in tandem with that of Turkey?

Isn't the Greek Cypriot flag invariably flown in tandem with the EU flag, then?
