How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

As for the selection of state flags, having neutral flags will be the best way to go, but if some degree of the "trnc" flag should remain for the north state and some degree of the flag of Greece should remain for the south state, then I suggest we do the following since no doubt there will be separations of State and Religion provisions that will be installed in the Federal and the State Constitutions.

The north state can have their own flag as the case is with all Federation state countries, but all religious symbols must be removed from them. Since the north will have majority TCs, they can keep the basic outlines of the "trnc" flag minus the crescent and the star since it has a strong attachment to the religion of Islam as the case is with most Muslim countries who seem to have similar flags. This will be seen as a neutral flag by others living in the north, primarily by large numbers of GCs in relationship to other foreigners living in the north.

For the south state, majority being GCs, they can keep the flag from Greece if they want, as long as the cross is removed from the top left corner for all the same reasons I gave above, the difference being representative of Christianity and not Islam.

The flag of Cyprus can remain as what it is today with perhaps adding another olive branch to it if need be to differentiate it from the one we have today, which will fly in both states along with the state and the EU flags.

"Since the north will have majority TCs, they can keep the basic outlines of the "trnc" flag minus the crescent and the star....."

Why stop there? Why don't you also suggest that as the TRNC flag and the TR flag are both Red/White, that the TRNC flag removes all remaining symbols which are coloured red?
Let's see then - what would we have left? A white flag with no symbols on it - Bingo!
You have them just where you want them. :D

VW, don't be an idiot, or else I'll treat you as one.!

First of all, how does the colours Red and White have any relevance to any religion.? Well, it does not, therefore any combination of White and Red can be accepted. In place of where the Crescent and the Star is located on the "trnc" flag, there can be the outlined shape of the north state placed there and the south can have the outlined south state where the cross appears on the flag of Greece. As I've said, we can have a more neutral flags for both north and the south states, but if there needs to be any remnants of the present flags used mostly in the north and the south, then the above suggestions could satisfy both sides without violating the separations of State and Religion provisions in the Federal and State Constitutions.

Why don't you just let people keep their own flags as they have them now and get rid of other flags, in particular those of other countries? That way there would be no TR flags and no GR flags anymore. You might have to dream up a new flag to represent Cyprus as a whole, but that's something for a Cypriot to come up with.

Kikapu IS a Cypriot, a Turkish speaking Cypriot and he is trying his best.
I agree that the flags should be neutral with no signs of 'outside' ethnicity symbols attached. I see difficulties here and am of the opinion that sacrifices should be made. I cannot see the Greek Cypriots 'erasing' the Greek heritage from their flag nor the TCs losing the Crescent and Star. But if each state is to encompass different ethnic people (not of the majority that is) these sacrifices ought to be made.

I seriously think we ought to revert to the Cyprus Republic flag - which I deem neutral. Some will disagree, naturally.

When I posted the above, I never even thought about it. Ismet V. Guney was my art teacher in the Turkish Boys Lycee in Nicosia. (RIP).

We do not see any of those flags flying during APOEL matches, do we?

I do not represent nor speak on behalf of the 4,500 Apoel South stand supporters. They have their beliefs and I have mine.

Feel free to feel embarrased. The teams name means Greeks of Nicosia, the constitution allows them to carry Greek flags wherever they like. The fact that I do not agree with them is not a cause of embarassment for me.

WHen you meet every week with your TC friends for coffee knowing that some of them enjoy the use of Turkish flags in protests/matches/elections....do you not feel embarassed?

I completely agree with Bananiot on this one; and that is the main reason why I do not support APOEL.
