I arrived early at the GAU, there were probably 200 people altogether in the building and outside. I had a chat with an English member of staff who showed me the hall where the speeches would be made and offered me a glass of mulled wine. Talat arrived late, there was a bit of confusion as to where he would enter the building so missed his actual arrival, as did the gentleman in the gown below.
There was a sort of line up inside so I joined the end and got to shake his hand, as Paphitis predicted he was not impressed. He spoke to various cameras in the reception area in Turkish. I was told that he had said that 5 or 10 years ago he would never have imagined a "trnc university" in a prestigious place like Canterbury, then he had a chat with the Mayor of Canterbury. A local photographer persuaded him to say something in English, he said that he hoped the GAU would improve relations between the two countries ("trnc" and UK) and help end the isolation of the TCs. I had managed to get next to him and asked how the talks were going, he said he was "cautiously optimistic", he turned away and then looked back at me, I think he realised he was talking to a person with GC roots. Politics aside Talat seems quite a charming person. The funny thing is the Turkish ambassador was there, I asked 5 or 6 people to point him out but nobody could identify him
At first I felt rather intimidated being in the company of so many TCs but looking around me, and with the sound off, it could have been a crowd from either community - that's what I find so sad about the Cyprus Problem.
