The ever proud "trnc" is officially opening the GAU tomorrow in Canterbury UK. Rumour has it that Talat and the Turkish ambassador will be there. Check out the links below, I can find no reference to what GAU stands for on the website. I assume it means Girne American University but aware of their crappy reputation and dodgy degrees the TC intellectuals don't want to reveal the truth to unsuspecting foriegn students.

I went to school in Canterbury and ran a business there for many years, the city is stuffed with universities, colleges and and private schools, accommodation is expensive and not easy to find. It looks like the "trnc" is trying to cash in - they will have an uphill struggle, there is a lot of competition in Canterbury.

I may pay Talat and co a visit tomorrow!

I see they have a poor quality "two-headed eagle" I'll wait for the minarets to go up on Canterbury Cathedral ... I predict murder!

It just sounds like some office for handling paperwork for college-type subjects like Tourism They state, explicitly, that they don't discriminate against ethnicity (strange to make a song and dance of this ) ... So, it would be interesting to follow this up, publicising their sister affiliated institute in "Girne" and see how quickly they are closed down!

Anyway, their web profile for www.gau.edu.tr shows a (minus ) -66% visitors (~500 visitors per month) to their web-page .... pretty poor for an Internet based teaching system.

TRNC PRESIDENT LEFT FOR LONDON THIS MORNING FOR A SERIES OF CONTACTS IN THE BRITISH CAPITAL.

TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat meets British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in London today.

The main topic of the meeting is expected to be the Cyprus negotiation process being conducted by Talat and Christofias. In an address at a panel, President Talat expressed the TC People’s desire for an early settlement.

The visit is perceived as fundamental, as Britain is one of the guarantor powers in Cyprus.

President Talat has embarked on his contacts by delivering a speech at a panel on the Cyprus peace negotiations chaired by Sir Kieran Prendergast, who served as the Secretary-General’s Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the United Nations from 1997-2005.

The panel took place at the Chatham House, also known as the Royal Institute of International Affairs.

In his speech, President Talat said that importance convergence had been reached on the issues of “governance and power sharing”, “economy” and “EU matters” in the first round of the Cyprus negotiation process.

He however added that differences still remain between the positions of the two sides on the issues of property, territory and guarantees.

Reminding that the objective of the Turkish Side had been to settle the Cyprus problem by the end of 2009 but added that the course of the negotiations has made it necessary to postpone this target to the first half of the New Year.

On the attitude of the Greek Cypriot Side, the President Talat said Greek Cypriot Side’s attempts to put pressure on Turkey through its EU membership talks and to convince the EU to put sanctions on Turkey in order to force it make more concessions on the Cyprus issue drew the picture that there wasn’t sufficient progress to reach a settlement.

The President’s agenda tomorrow includes the inauguration ceremony of the TRNC-based Girne American University’s campus at Canterbury and a meeting with Turkish students.

they don't even mention the pseudo presidente coming to inaugurate the campus.

I have just read in my local paper "The Kentish Gazette" that the ceremony is to take place at 11.00am. The "KG" used to be printed in the building now occupied by the "University". According to the report GAU stands for "Global American University" No mention of the "dignitaries" attending. They are not expecting a large crowd - the "University" has seven students. It looks like the con trick has worked however, one of the students has a Greek name.
