UN REPORT ON UNFICYP - Promotes ending isolation

Postby Acikgoz » Fri Dec 04, 2009 3:13 pm

Who says there are no embargoes/isolation of TCs?

Latest Ban Ki Moon Report, note section 35:

"As I have mentioned before, the establishment of economic, social, cultural, sporting or similar ties and contacts will have a positive impact on the peace process. Such contacts would nurture a sentiment of trust between the communities and help ease the sense of isolation felt by the Turkish Cypriots. Further, greater economic and social parity between the sides will make the eventual reunification not only easier, but also more likely. In the context of an internationally sanctioned peace process, efforts in the opposite direction can only be counterproductive."

Will all those that sight the UN in their defence also choose to follow their recommendation? Not on your life....

Don't be silly. Most of the posters on here would never ease the pressure on the TCs for even a moment.

What a pity Ban Ki Moon didn't suggest a quid pro quo - the return of Varosha. Frankly it demonstrates how little he cares about or understands the Cyprus problem. Both sides have issues with each other, suggesting one side unilaterally does something to assist the peace process is in fact counterproductive.

When the UNSG speaks, it is listened to. I hope the UNSC heeds it.

But as I read it, Ban Ki was talking about more ties between GC and TCs, not the jet full of greedy brits flying to n cyprus to find a cheap villa built on GC land, as you want?

He means ties and contacts with and through the free part of Cyprus. Of course these will have a positive impact.

He also says these will 'help ease the sense of isolation felt by TCs'... Again, nothing wrong with that. If TCs feel isolated and closer ties with the people living in the free areas can help with this, surely that's a good thing.

He chooses his words carefully. I wish people would take the same care when reading them.

So, yes. Let's follow the UN recommendations then. Are Turkey's troops going? Not on your life...

Like others inc our MPapa, saw immediately the clear disparity between "isolation" in the headline to this and, in BonkyMoon's actual words, "sence of isolation" - very poor attempt at propaganda.
