LEADERS AGREE TO INTENSIFY TALKS

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Tony-4497 » Wed Dec 09, 2009 2:04 pm

That we were better off under Papad??All I remember from his time in power was bitterness, recrimination and an atmosphere of the 1960's,plus our isolation by the international community with a clown like Lillikas playing foreign minister and being ridiculed!

You cannot be serious. Bitterness etc are all subjective matters. Isolation, however, is what we have NOW. This is based on RESULTS and not on subjective issues.

TPap was able to convince the EU to give a deadline for Turkey to implement the protocol and managed to get CONSENSUS on freezing 8 chapters. What did Chritofias ACHIEVE?

He managed to waste the dealine, achieved no sanctions and put Cyprus in complete isolation i.e. had to make a pathetic unilateral statement that no other EU country supported!

Impose sanctions on Turkey....

Postby cymart » Wed Dec 09, 2009 4:07 pm

The E.U. will not agree do this for the reason that they know it would be counter-productive and only make Turkey even less inclined to co-operate!The leaders of the main Greek-Cypriot parties and Christophias know this reality only too well and this is why they settled for the compromise yesterday,as expected.Erdogan is trying to keep a very difficult balance between the forces in Turkey who are pro E.U. and those who are against joining because they believe Turkey can still exploit its strategic position without having to subject itself to anyones demands!Of course there are also some people here who are totally opposed to the current Cyprus negotations because they do not support the kind of solution based on federal power sharing which is being worked-out and instead prefer either final partition with a purely G.C. state in the south,or the indefinite continuation of the present staus-quo,despite all the negative implications this would have, including effectively writing-off all the territory in the north! There are also those who fear that their minority parties would not have any political power under a new federal parliament, especially as their existence is based on spouting ideals about a non-solution of the Cyprus question, other than utopia!Upsetting Turkey and the collapse of the Christophias Talat negotiations would suit them fine, knowing that the political future of them both would be over and they could then try to get another wanker elected who will have worse views than the late Papad!!There is no other option:either work out a compromise in the next few months as they are trying to do now,or final partition with all that will imply! The current status-quo has run out of time and will not continue!

Tell us how we are in any way better off today, after 2 years of Christofias's "flexible" policy, than we were before he took over.

Any objective person can see we are now at a substantially worse position.

You said an objective person can see that we are in a worse position but who is going to decide who is objective and who is not ? as this is a matter of judgement .

Christofias may know our constitution we signed in 1960 and whether it was imposed or not its irrelevant as it was far better of the other alternative and I mean Enosis. Of course no one speaks for Enosis now but I think he tries to find an alternative arrangement where both sides will be happy and If you think there is a perfect constitution on this planet you are mistaken as there are many countries with "perfect constitution" and I mean unitary states that have failed to deliver the basic human rights. Give the man time and judge him by final results delivered ........

Why don't you give in to "your curiosity" and relieve yourself (and us  ) from this constant obsession! A consequence of being imprisoned in the north with 43,000 willing and able recipients ...
