Police looking to Russia for motives of millionaire’s murder
By Anna Hassapi
POLICE investigators yesterday confirmed that the search for the motives behind the murder of 61-year-old millionaire Yuri Kirilov, who was found strangled on a Limassol beach on Monday, will be focusing on his links and past activities abroad and specifically in his native Russia.
“We believe that the motives were personal differences between the victim and someone from his past. Following our information gathering our investigation is turning at a specific direction. We are examining the possibility of searching for leads in Russia, “confirmed Limassol Police Chief Yiannakis Georgiou.
Kirilov lived in Limassol in the past 15 years and maintained a clean police record, while police confirmed that he had never reported receiving any threats. For this reason police are convinced that Kirilov’s assassins were not motivated by his Cyprus-based activities.
They are looking into the 61-year-old’s past in Russia in order to find possible suspects.
Kirilov’s family, friends and business associates have already given statements to police, all of which are presently being evaluated. Kirilov operated a successful property developing company from Limassol.
The 61-year-old was found dead on an Ayios Tychonas beach on Monday. His body had been hastily covered with tree branches and he was found face down inside a ditch next to the popular walkway.
The post mortem performed on the victim’s body confirmed that the man had died 10 to 12 hours prior to his body being discovered.
Police investigators found personal items carried by the victim, including his keys, mobile phone and an expensive watch. Next to the body, police found a large syringe usually used to as a veterinary anaesthetic, as well as a needle.
