They should open a humungus Communist Akel run casino complex in the Cypriot equivalent of the Nevada Desert- Avgorou. IF they open the Casino near coast line they are seriously retarded.

Cyprus also needs a Disney land- maybe a down market version like Nickelodeon land - Sponge Bob Square pants could replace the copper outline of Cyprus on our flag.

I would like to see a few more airlines fly into CY - this could/should help competition which should lower prices. But knowing our dear Cypriot friends they will probably increase landing charges ;(

We had so many potential clientele this year that didn't come because of the over prices flight fares.. :)
We've discovered a good way of getting cheap flights.

Som people seem to think that Cyprus has only just become expensive, when we returned in 1998 after a 31 year break it was the most expensive resort in the Med then and that was when you got 0.92 cents to the UK£.

Instead of looking for new markets....

They should ask themselves why they have lost the ones they traditionally relied on??
And as for the all the myths about the Russian market,I can tell you from personal experience with it when it opened back in the 1990's that it was crazy to think this could ever replace the British one,as some Cypriots were boasting back then!!Most of people here have no idea here about the reality of how the vast majority of Russians live-there are still people living a hundred miles from Moscow who cannot even afforrd the fare to go there by train, let alone go abroad!!So manyCypriot people were naively lured into wasting their time and money trying to bring tourists from Russia and the few firms that are still in that market are generally Russian and manage to operate there because they can cope with all the corruption and the mafia over there.I know of one well-known Anglo-cypriot tour firm which had an office in Moscow and spent millions for about 10 years before finally giving up in 2008 because they were always losing money!
Maybe the C.T.O. should also find an explanation why ten times more Russians visit Turkey every summer than Cyprus? The total to Cyprus is less than 200.000 and that includes the number of passengers on planes, not those staying in hotels,so you have to allow for the Russian residents here and their friends and familes in that figure. In contrast the number of U.K. visitors is well over 1 million!
Anyone who wants to know more about Russia is welcome to p.m. me.

Cyprus has always been slightly more expensive than other destinations but back then they had some really nice places to stay and along with it came the fantastic Cypriot hospitality so you accepted it. Now, things are very different.

I would like to see more resturants/bars with more Cypriot people working there.

Despite all the gripes on the forum and media which have been going on for at least 5 years now, it doesn’t appear that tourism is suffering…

Spreadsheet: “TOURISM - ARRIVALS OF TOURISTS – INDICATORS”

TOURIST ARRIVALS (Thous.)

1999 2,434.3
2000 2,686.2
2001 2,696.7
2002 2,418.2
2003 2,303.2
2004 2,349.0
2005 2,470.1
2006 2,400.9
2007 2,416.1
2008 2,403.8

http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/cystat/statis ... enDocument

Of course, that’s not to say that tourism intake cannot be improved but the figures speak for themselves that Cyprus tourism is very steady.

That's a good statistic there...but tourism revenues are certainly suffering.
From the same source:

I don't see a single positive change in that whole table.

Also the figures for tourist arrivals do not capture the 'purpose of visit' , or 'duration of stay'. The number of arrivals do not really show the whole picture.

I can see from that table that the 2009 (Jan to Oct) saw nearly 2 million tourists already enter Cyprus and there’s still two months to go till the end of the year unaccounted for.

So, its not that people are not coming to Cyprus but you could say that they are not spending as much, which is understandable with the global recession and its something that must be affecting every country.

For the same period of time (Jan to Oct) previous years have experienced higher numbers of tourist arrivals by about 10%....I don't understand your argument here.

As far as spending is concerned, you are right that they are not spending as much. That was exactly my point when I posted the table. I wasn't contradicting your argument. I was just complementing your thought. It was indeed a good point that you made about the number of tourists in recent years. Due to the economic recession we need to become more competitive, because consumers are increasingly seeking value for their money.
