OUTRAGEOUS

Here is another account of what really transpired, which includes the proper CY names of sites....

From the CY Mail ......

Bishop prevented from leading Apostolas Andreas celebrations
By Sebastian Heller
TURKISH Cypriot police yesterday prevented the Bishop of Karpasia, Christoforos, from leading the church service at Apostolos Andreas yesterday.

Christoforos was due to lead the annual service to mark the saint’s feast day, but after the intervention of the Turkish Cypriot police the celebrations were instead led by the priest attached to the monastery.

Bishop Christoforos was allowed into the church to be present at the service and was permitted to perform a blessing at the end.

There was a heavy police presence in the area around the monastery and also directly outside it. According to state broadcasters, plain clothes ‘TRNC’ police were also present inside the church itself during the service, filming the attendees and the church service.

The services began at around 9:30am at the historic monastery located on the tip of the Karpas peninsula where the Apostle Andrew was said to have first set foot on the island.

The service was attended by Peter Millett, the British High Commissioner to Cyprus, and about 2,000 worshippers.

It is estimated that the name Andreas, along with the other similar names celebrated on this saint’s day, is the most common in Cyprus with more than 40,000 people celebrating their name day on November 30.

On Sunday thousands of people, at least fifty buses and hundreds of private cars created a dense throng around the historical monastery to attend the festivities being held that day and into the night.

From all over Cyprus people descended on the monastery bearing the large candles taken to such events and votive offerings. The celebrations were led by Father Zacharia Georgiou on Sunday and included vespers into the late evening.

Once again the Illegal Regime had a chance to show some Goodwill at this service. How did the Occupation Regime react on this most important date in the Orthodox Calendar? How did it treat the service at the single most important site in the CY Christian Church? What respect did the Fascist Regime show to one of the leaders of the CY Christian Church, Bishop Chrisoforos?

By packing the Monastery with secret "police" photographing the congregation, with a heavy "police" presence outside and by barring The Bishop from leading the service.

In other words with the same goodwill it showed at the Morphou Pilgrimage a few months ago ... With Bugger All Goodwill.

Here is the RoC CNA on the subject ....(which warns us of wider implications).....

SPOKESMAN – TURKISH REGIME

The action of the Turkish occupation regime not to allow Bishop of Karpasia, Christoforos, to hold a church service at the Turkish occupied monastery of Apostolos Andreas, must make us enhance efforts for a Cyprus settlement, said Tuesday Government Spokesman, Stefanos Stefanou.

“We are under occupation and freedom does not exist here”, Stephanou told the reporters, invited to comment on the action of the Turkish Cypriot regime Monday, to prevent Bishop of Karpasia Christoforos from holding the annual church service to mark Saint Andrews’s day.

Stephanou added that it was not the first time the occupation regime behaved that way. He also said that every time actions like this happen, the occupation regime shows its real face.

“These actions of the occupation regime should strengthen our belief that we should continue trying to solve the Cyprus problem, because as long as there is occupation, occupying forces and as long as the occupation does not allow the Republic of Cyprus to effectively exercise its sovereignty throughout the whole country, we will have actions like this as well as many other negative and unacceptable actions”, said Stephanou."
