Accidental Hypothermia from overdose of drugs.

Postby rincat » Thu Nov 26, 2009 2:29 pm

After 1 day of body temperature above 38 degree, we started giving to my 4 year old child antibiotic with Nurofen children (ibuprofen), under doctor’s prescription; the following day the temperature dropped down to 37 - 37.5 degrees. Yesterday all day we continued this therapy ANTIBIOTIC+ NUROFEN and last night before bed having still 37 degree temperature as a precaution for the night we gave him a ¾ dose of Nurofen. We should have never done that!!! During the night my wife wake up and found our child pretty cold! His temperature dropped down to 34 degrees so he was on Hypothermia. We called the first aid and they told us to heat up the baby with hot fluids, extra covers and increasing room temperature, we did that and his body temperature finally started to increase until reached 35.5 degree in the morning, so almost normal.

My question is now: why our doctor did not tell us that NUROFEN IS TO BE GIVEN ONLY ABOVE 38 DEGREES? AND THAT WAS DANGEROUS GIVE IT AT LOW TEMPERATURES SUCH AS 37! We could never ever imagine that Nurofen could bring down levels under normal body temperature, also on the medicine leaflet no were say the word Hypothermia or similar situation!
What would have been happened if my wife did not wake up in the night to check the baby???

Just be thankfull to this small miracles getting on time before something terrible happening. Hope your childs gets better and thx for the warning about this drug. Is it maybe because of the mixing between antibiotic and nurofen? Allergy? Look more into it to be more careful next time

rincat ... so pleased to hear everything was OK in the end and thanks for highlighting this problem. Most people would have done the same thing in your situation without realising its dangers so just be glad you got there in time.

Doctors too easily resort to prescribing Paracetamol products and they are nasty chemicals ... I was always made to feel guilty when I refused to use them on my son, even when it meant staying up all night changing cold compresses to the forehead.

These wonder-drugs don't come without their dangers ...
