I read that in 1870 Scotch was so bad that Irish and American distillers added an "e" to differentiate between their product and inferior Scotch. Look at your source - perhaps Magee and Malachy publishing through O'Brien press might try to put a downer on Scottish whisky and 'sex up' the Irish version.
