Should Talat claim political asylum in the UK?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Should Talat claim political asylum in the UK?

Postby Malapapa » Sat Nov 21, 2009 6:06 pm

Mehmet Ali Talat is due to visit Britain soon to discuss progress towards a solution to the Cyprus problem with PM Gordon Brown.

Talat and President Christofias have been urged by the international community to secure a solution "BY Cypriots FOR Cypriots" (a phrase coined by Brown himself and from which there can be no turning back).

If Talat were brave enough he could do his people and the whole of Cyprus a huge service by claiming political asylum. As a Cypriot and EU citizen, he could request protection from Turkey for his genuine political beliefs.

Talat could explain to the waiting international media, outside No 10, that, although he was the elected leader of the TC people, it was impossible for him to act solely in their interests in negotiations to reunify Cyprus.

He could explain that this was because of the stranglehold Turkey and its military had over him; a military which wished to maintain its control of the northern third of the island for its own geo-strategic purposes, even if this was at the expense of the TC people, not to mention the Cypriot people as a whole.

Such an act by Talat would be the catalyst needed to solve the Cyprus problem once and for all, rendering Turkey's presence in Cyprus a complete anomaly before the eyes of the whole world.

Overnight, Talat would become a hero in Cyprus. Turkey's military would have no option but to withdraw in shame, its tail firmly wedged between its knees. All statues of Ataturk in the north would be replaced by statues of Mehmet Ali Talat.

Come on Mr Talat! Be brave. Think of the publicity. Think of the book deals!

It's time for you to relinquish the artificial political asylum that is the "TRNC" and claim real political asylum in the UK.

Be a hero. Not a zero. Don't be a weed, lead!

WhyFred? Don't you think it would help with reunification if Talat were to claim asylum?

MP its a good plan, but the UK wouldn't have him for all the tea in China.

Next he'll want to annexe north london and demand a seperate state FFS.

But a good idea nevertheless.

You may be right, B25 although it will be very difficult for Brown to turn him down outside no. 10...

If Talat were to do this, he'd no doubt be elected the first president of a truly reunified Cyprus, for sure! No rotations, no nothing...

He is not going to be allowed into No 10 like your vertically challenged Muhtar, is he? If that is not upgrading Talat to Top Muhtar, I don't know what is.
