Average wage in Cyprus - pretty average???

Postby Paphitis » Tue Nov 10, 2009 2:53 pm

Average wage up to €1,697 a month

THE AVERAGE monthly wage in Cyprus during the second quarter of the year was €1,697, or €1,882 for men and €1,467 for women, the Statistics Department said yesterday.

The Department said the wage reached in the second quarter was up 5.4 per cent over the same period last year. When broken down again into men and women’s wages, the rise in the salaries for men was 4.9 per cent and for women 6.3 per cent.

Despite this, men still earn on average around 25 per cent more than women

The salaries of government employees were not included in the data. Neither were the wages in the construction sector because of re-negotiated pay deals that would have skewed the data.

“In both cases, the increase in wages and salaries will be recorded in the third quarter of the year, when the arrear payments materialised,” said the Statistics Department.

While wages and salaries were some 5.0 per cent up during the period under review, inflation increased at almost the same rate, or slightly higher.

The average wage in Cyprus appears to be extremely low by other standards within Europe and elsewhere.

In fact, such an average wage is considered to be below the poverty line in Australia. You would definitely not be able to afford to buy a house, and you would be living week to week, struggling to make ends meet. There would be no room for any luxury in your living, and rent would consume most of your income if you did not own your home as you would be unable to obtain a loan to buy a home.

So how do Cypriots make ends meet, if the above figures are accurate? :?

Is the average wage outlined above adequate?

Seems to me that the best option for those wanting to live in Cyprus is to go it alone and start up their own business and not work for any bugger!

The average wage in CY €1,697? All the forum sites etc that I go on people earn around the €800 mark not €1,697. I think nurses get around €1,100 don't they? I think I saw that somewhere but not sure.

You are right the way to survive is bugger working for someone and go-alone!

There must be a small number of very high earners who are skewıng the average upwards.

What would really be interesting is the average wage they pay to the TCs as well as the distribution to see how the roc has changed from the bad old days.

The above figures are average, but still appear low by other standards.

No doubt there would be some not even earning that much, because if they did, then the average would be mathematically much higher than what is stated above.

An average wage of €1,697 is certainly low enough (to put it mildly), but salaries lower than €1,000 per month is just madness...

So how do Cypriots make ends meet?

There are also the very low earners who do the opposite ;) There are a lot of people who earn a lot more than the average not a small number.

I always had the impression that Cyprus was a low wage economy, but I do not have much solid data to go on.

1st Class Honours Degree in English or History gets you 900-1000 in retail in Limassol.
How do I know ? that's what my friends daughter and sister get paid. How do they manage ? their father, mother, grandmother, grandfather help them out.
