THE AVERAGE monthly wage in Cyprus during the second quarter of the year was €1,697, or €1,882 for men and €1,467 for women, the Statistics Department said yesterday.

The Department said the wage reached in the second quarter was up 5.4 per cent over the same period last year. When broken down again into men and women’s wages, the rise in the salaries for men was 4.9 per cent and for women 6.3 per cent.

Despite this, men still earn on average around 25 per cent more than women

The salaries of government employees were not included in the data. Neither were the wages in the construction sector because of re-negotiated pay deals that would have skewed the data.

“In both cases, the increase in wages and salaries will be recorded in the third quarter of the year, when the arrear payments materialised,” said the Statistics Department.

While wages and salaries were some 5.0 per cent up during the period under review, inflation increased at almost the same rate, or slightly higher.

The average wage in Cyprus appears to be extremely low by other standards within Europe and elsewhere.

In fact, such an average wage is considered to be below the poverty line in Australia. You would definitely not be able to afford to buy a house, and you would be living week to week, struggling to make ends meet. There would be no room for any luxury in your living, and rent would consume most of your income if you did not own your home as you would be unable to obtain a loan to buy a home.

So how do Cypriots make ends meet, if the above figures are accurate? :?

Is the average wage outlined above adequate?

Seems to me that the best option for those wanting to live in Cyprus is to go it alone and start up their own business and not work for any bugger!

Excluding these buggers brings the average down, especially as what they earn when they actually make an effort while illegally running their kiosks/shops/whatever, never appears in the statistics!

Don't get me started on Government teachers that do a crap job at school so they can give illegal private lessons in the afternoons to their own pupils!

The issue u mentioned in red highlighted bit of ur message widely exist in North too. This bad manner of government teachers drives me crazy! Although they r paid very high salaries how can they be this much greedy and low!
