I was not suggesting that Pafos airport was built for military purposes, only that I do not see the military letting it go. There is, of course, the supplementary runway on the motorway nearby, with the 'disposable' ARMCO barriers, also with 'turnround' bays - as there is on the Nicosia- Larnaca motorway.

Well the military have some excellent facilities at Paphos, and these are far away from the civil terminal and tarmac. There are many Airports around the world that have a dual civil and military roles. in Australia, we have many. Canberra Airport is dual civil and military, and Darwin International is also dual civil and military and has one of the longest runways in the world. They must have built that one for the Space shuttle...
The motorways in Cyprus are capable of handling F-16 fighters as you say, and they even have a fuel depot for refuelling aircraft, with Jet A1 fuel (or so I'm told).
However, there is also the Lakatamia Air Base south of Nicosia, which is a fully fledged Airport with a 2,000m runway.
