The American commentator unwittingly summed it up with just three words - "the strategic island".

That's all Cyprus was/is to "The Powers", never mind what the natives want.

ARMY ACTIVITIES IN CYPRUS 1955
Unissued / Unused material.

Army activities in Cyprus.

MS patrol walking through street with prisoners. MS Cypriot prisoners. LS army truck passing through street showing houses and restaurant. LS soldiers on guard behind barbed wire. MS people getting off bus. Various shots of luggage being searched. Various shots people being searched, including children. LS soldier carrying bag for old woman. MS bus leaving and travelling along road. MS high school. MS pan from top of school down to steps. MS writing on school wall.

Various shots Lefkonico. LS writing on wall, EOKA. MS chairs outside cafe. Various shots restaurant with shutters up. MS sign saying: "Co-operative Credit Society" in English and Greek. LS bridge. MS as soldiers on patrol stop car. LS soldiers taking up barbed wire. MS signpost: 'Lefkonico 30'. LS road block at Nicosia end of village. Various shots as police issue passes to people caught in Lefkonico when the curfew was imposed and who wished to leave. Various shots soldiers washing and shaving by improvised means.

Various shots of the tented camp. LS small WRAC (Women's Royal Army Corps) compound with nissen huts. MS's scrubland. Various shots of a Turkish shepherd and his flock of sheep. MS line of tents. Various shots soldier watering cactus plant outside his tent. Various shots entrance to camp and noticeboard saying 'KYKKO CAMP'. CU sign boards saying: 'Nicosia out of bounds' and 'Personnel will not book out in groups of less than four'. MS combat car entering camp with stone guard in front of windscreen.

MS as Cypriot civilians are frisked on entering camp, besides showing their passes. MS cookhouse. LS WRACs (Women's Royal Army Corps) hanging out washing. MS WRAC quarters. MS WRAC doing ironing. MS two WRACs - Corporal Beryl Ingham and Lance Corporal Margaret Moyse. Interior MS cookhouse, CU frying fish. CU menu. MS soldiers queuing up for dinner and being served. Various shots soldiers eating their meals, they include Lance Corporal Keys, Worthing and Sapper Dixon. MS WRAC pay parade.

CRISIS ISLAND 1955
Nicosia, Cyprus.

Major Greek population on British ruled Cyprus wants to unify with Greece. Britain agrees to discuss independence of the island but rejects its unification. The main reason - Cyprus is a vital NATO base. GV. Pan, island of Cyprus. SV. Four engine plane of the Royal Air Force transport command taxiing in at the aerodrome at Nicosia. SV. Chief of the Imperial General Staff, Field Marshal Sir John Harding stepping down from plane and being greeted by Mr Fletcher Cooke. He is to take up his new appointment as Governor General of Cyprus. SCU. Pan, Sir John Harding walks away from plane. GV. Greek church. SV. Archbishop Makarios with another Orthodox priest. He is demanding unification of Cyprus with Greece. Greek population of the island (majority, four-fifths) agrees with him. SV. Turkish flag flying from tower. CU. Islamic Mufti of Cyprus, Dana Effendi. He is against unification of the island with Greece. GV. Village Church of Trahoni where Archbishop Makarios takes the service - the letters E.O.K.A. can be seen painted on the walls of the church - and other slogans demanding unification. E.O.K.A. is the pro-Greek terrorist organisation - claims voiceover. LV. Crowds outside Church waiting for the Archbishop to come out - more slogans can be seen on the walls. CU. Archbishop Makarios coming out of church - he walks past large painted letters on wall E.O.K.A. LV. Pan, the Archbishop walking through the village with large crowd following, he is accompanied by other priests. SV. Pan, the Archbishop walking to the house of priests (more slogans on the wall). The crowd following him are now applauding him. SV. Sir John Harding outside Government House inspecting the first Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment - he walks towards the camera, stops and talks to a soldier. GV. Government House. SV. Interior, looking down the centre of the table - Sir John Harding standing at the end of table being sworn in and proclaimed Governor and Commander-in-Chief. He stands as Proclamation is read, & SCU.

GV Elevated Nicosia. LV General George Grivas and Archbishop Makarios driving in open car through crowded streets. LV Crowds. SV General Grivas and Archbishop waving from car. VS General Grivas and the Archbishop on platform - Grivas makes a speech on the current conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. CU Makarios listening. SV Grivas speaking and waving arm. GV Elevated. Mass crowds gathered listening to Gen. Grivas (former EOKA leader).
