TURKISH NATIONAL CONTINGENT ARRIVES IN CYPRUS FOR DUTY aka TURKISH CONTINGENT IN CYPRUS 1964

Famagusta and Nicosia, Cyprus

MS and CU a sign in English, Greek and Turkish at a United Nations check point on a road in the open Cyprus country. Various shots, general activity of Canadian UN troops sitting in their jeeps and blocking the road.

Various shots, at Famagusta Docks, troops of the Turkish National Contingent disembark from ship (they are unarmed). They parade on dock. They board minibuses etc. and leave for Nicosia. LS More troops disembarking with full kit. They also parade on dock and then board lorries.

Various good shots, cars going through checkpoint and being searched by U.N. / United Nations troops. GV. Famagusta. Various shots, the Turkish National Contingent's convoy of armoured vehicles and military jeeps on the road to Nicosia mixed in with local traffic. MS Troops arriving at barracks in lorries and other vehicles. Various shots, naval ship "Basaran (A582)" arriving at Famagusta Docks with supplies.

Note: Date on original record: 26/10/1964. Contemporary notes refer to the reopening of the Kyrenia Road to civilian traffic at 09.30, that there were no Greek roadblocks at either end and that the UN would carry out a 24 hour patrol along the road. The cameraman was not allowed to film on the way to Kyrenia.

CYPRIOT TURKS MARCH TO DOWNING STREET 1958
London.

Close up shot of a large sign reading 'Cyprus is Turkish and Will Remain'. Various shots of floats with Turkish demonstrators getting ready to march to Downing Street with placards expressing their dissatisfaction with British political action at Cyprus. LS. Headquarters of the Turkish demonstrators in Dean Street, crowd gathering, some in national costumes and with Turkish flags. Many children are seen. Various shots of the people marching through streets of Central London, they past the Houses of Parliament, the Cenotaph, Trafalgar Square etc. People march to Downing Street. Mr Necati Sager and delegation leave to hand petition into No 10. People outside looking on. Various shots of Trafalgar Square with demonstrators with banners gathered around. Several shots of a squabble with police intervening. Speakers address the crowd. More shots of the crowd at Downing Street and at Trafalgar Square.

TURKS ASK FOR PROTECTION - FUNERAL OF NUN & MONK 1958
Nicosia, Cyprus.

Meeting at Kyrenia Gate, Nicosia of Turkish workers to ask for protection against Greeks. British Military Police stand by to escort them if necessary. Shots of Turks with Military Police. City Gate Kyrenia. Various shots of coffins of the murdered Nun, Monk & 11 year old shepherd boy being taken from Larnaca Hospital, wreaths being placed on coffin procession. Various shots of bodies of Nun and Monk being brought to Gregorian Monastery. VS in square at Aradipoli (LS & Cs) Various shots of Burial of Nun and Monk at cemetery situated in the Mountain district of Audellero (LS & CU). Boy aged 11 years murdered in the village of Athienou. Flag of Greece on Church. Procession winding it's way through village. Arriving at Church. GV. Village and mountains outside church. SHOOTING INCIDENT IN NICOSIA (1958)

Nicosia, Cyprus. Army and police patrols increase after shooting of Greek Cypriot man in street.

Various shots of soldiers surrounding place and the arrival of the Security Police. People gathering in groups around scene. Chief of Police using car radio to headquarters and soldiers searching nearby gardens for bullets. Shot of table with meal as it was after the shooting. Turkish quarters being patrolled by Lancashire Fusiliers after the shooting.

(Lav.) Old record suggests material dates from around 26/06/1958. Several shots are repeated and there is lots of spacing.

ANTI-BRITISH MARCH IN CYPRUS (1964)

Large crowd being addressed at Apollo before beginning the march. VS. Of the Greek Cypriots marching to Limassol. VS. Mass meeting in Limassol and the crowd is addressed by Turkish Cypriot politician Dr. Ibsan Orly.

Bit frustrating there is no commentary for this film - anyone know more about this march? Was this a joint GC-TC demonstration against the Brits?

Elevated Nicosia. General George Grivas and Archbishop Makarios driving in open car through crowded streets. Crowds. General Grivas and Archbishop waving from car. General Grivas and the Archbishop on platform - Grivas makes a speech on the current conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Makarios listening. Grivas speaking and waving arm. Elevated. Mass crowds gathered listening to Gen. Grivas (former EOKA leader).

GRIVAS ARRIVES IN ATHENS (1959)

Various shots of Dakota planes arriving, one of them carrying EOKA's (the national organisation of Cypriot Struggle for Union with Greece) leader Colonel Grivas. Various shots of Colonel Grivas being welcomed by his friends etc. Colonel Grivas standing in open car, saluting crowds. Colonel Grivas saluting. Mrs Grivas being led up steps. Various shots of Colonel Grivas shaking hands with Greek Prime Minister Karamanlis by entrance of Presidency, while Mrs Grivas, Archbishop of Athens Theokilitos and Bishop of Kitoum Anthimos are about to leave the Presidency. Various shots of procession preceded by motorcycles and police cars, strong police force holding back crowds. Colonel Grivas arrives at the Unknown Soldier's tomb platform.

MAKARIOS ACCLAIMED (1959)

General view of Cyprus. Several shots of Archbishop Makarios arriving back at Nicosia airport after his exile of three years. He is greeted by officials including the Bishops of Kitium and Salamis. Makarios walks to his car, accompanied by Governor of Cyprus, Sir Hugh Foot. Crowds line the streets and cheer as he goes by.

Makarios is driven slowly through the streets of Nicosia in an open car. The frenzied crowds cheer wildly, wave and run alongside the cavalcade. Makarios is surrounded by security men. Church bell being rung. Makarios waving to the excited crowds from the balcony of his residence.
