Buying Property in Northern Cyprus - General chat

Postby Elizabeth Bobin » Tue Jul 12, 2005 10:01 pm

Has anyone on the site bought in Northern Cyprus.
We have started thinking about it in the last 2 weeks so would love to speak to others that have done so.

I'm no fan of Cyprus, but buying property in the north is despicable!

Covered in blood darling, you should be ashamed of yourself!

I'm in agreement with ex-pat. Define Northern Cyprus for me Ms Bobin?

Elizabeth, I'd refer you to the latest Foreign Office advice... beyond that I think you need to refer to a lawyer on the matter.

FCO wrote:Can I purchase property in Cyprus?

The non-recognition of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" and the possibility of a future political settlement in Cyprus could have significant practical or financial implications for those considering buying property in the north. There is also a risk that purchasers would face legal proceedings in the courts of the Republic of Cyprus. Separately, there are specific rules for foreigners purchasing property in the north and you should ensure you are fully aware of these.

We do not attempt to place restrictions on private citizens wishing to purchase property. However, before purchasing you are strongly advised to appraise yourself fully of the situation and to seek qualified independent legal advice.

Sorry, but this forum can not give any help to you for this, since "purchasing" property in the occupied part of Cyprus is illegal more often than not.

Do you have assets in the UK or elsewhere in the EU we can seize?

Elizabeth
I hope your question was a genuine one in which case you must accept that the replies you get may be a bit curt.
Can I assume you are ignorant of the situation regarding property built in the Occupied regions of the Island in that much of it is built on what can only be described as stolen land. Be very carefull because if you think about buying a property it may be built on land belonging to someone else and not the vendor no matter how reassuring he sounds or how official looking the title deeds are.
Elizabeth, ask yourself why is a comparable property so much cheaper in the occupied area than in the South of the Island. If you did not have the burden of the cost of land prior to building it will be cheaper. If you are however thinking of making a fast buck, and I sincerely hope you have a bit more integrity than that, then you must be prepared for any consequences from actions through any european court including the UK. Do you have any Greek Cypriot friends or for that matter any Cypriot friends of any origin? If so speak to them.

Whilst I agree with the sentiments expressed previously, I find it a little hypocritical to see 2 adverts at the top of this page advertising property for sale in northern cyprus.
Maybe the people running this forum are missing the point.
