The delights of molohia

Postby Tim Drayton » Thu Nov 05, 2009 6:44 pm

Today, I finally managed to find the famous restaurant known as 'Magarina Bulli' in north Nicosia which serves authentic Cypriot food and molohia was on the menu. I have heard so much about this and have long wanted to try it. I was not disappointed. It tastes to me like spinach mixed with very strong tea! Since I am partial to both of these things, I have become an instant molohia fan.

Is it true that, although this plant grows in Cyprus, it is only eaten by Turkish Cypriots and not by Greek Cypriots?

You lucky thing. Was it Meat or chicken Molohia. Regarding GCs not eating it, all I can say is Eshek bilir yesin maydanoz?

At some stage you must try the Lurucadi Kebab restaurant in Lefkosha and another one on the old Gonyeli to Girne road. Try the Glefdiko, and then you will appreciate the real taste of glefdiko. But only if the sheep was stolen from a GC.

Although it looks like spinach when cooked and it's juice reminds very strong tea... besides when u defecate the s**t becomes pure dark black; it does not taste like how u described. :? It tastes like Polygonum cognatum(Madımak).

As for whether GCs eat molehiya or not I have no idea...

Molokhiya (or Melokhiya) is a vegetable native to Egypt, very popular in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean regions. It has also become very popular in Japan and Southeastern Asia. It has been reported that this vegetable contains calcium, carotine, minerals, vitamin A, B1 and B2. Molokhiya is a very nutritious and healthy vegetable. Plants love warm conditions and grow well under full sun from spring to fall. Young green leaves and shoots of this fast growing vegetable are picked for cooking use. They add flavor and viscous texture to soups and stews similar to that Okra does in the cooking. Plants can also harvested and dried for later use in winter.

I didn't know that it contains a lot of minerals and vitamins. :?
