Postby athenaandgary » Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:54 am

Hi All im new to this so here goes,
Me and my husband and our 2 yr old daughter have just come back from our honeymoon in cyprus and we have family over there and we absolutly love it i cant stop thinking about cyprus the lifestyle the relaxation and laid back additude just draws us in and the locals make you feel so welcome but i have a few set backs that are stopping me making permanent plans help? We want to move to limassol and rent a house further out from the centre but im not sure of prices or where is good to look at we both drive so travelling distance is not a problem? also my daughter will be 3 when we move there and i am not sure if its best to put her into a local govement funded school or private and if private which ones there are so many in limassol and all the reviwes have good and bad to them. we are not sure if we should ship all our items from the uk over or just sell it all and buy over there ads electrical goods are expensive. lastly we both will need to work my husband works as a courior or forklift driver but im not sure if they have those jobs over there and if they do what the wages are like? i work as a veterinary receptionist so i can do any admin or retail with customers so im easy to sort out but if i work full tiem i will child care and im not sure what my options are please help with any advice you can xxxxxxx

Cyprus is a wonderful place, but wages here are very low, I am afraid. If you can't speak the language you will also be very limited as to the work you can do. Sorry to sound so negative.

20ft container from door to door would be around £1600 plus vat with us. We will be advertising on here soon so keep ya eyes peeled.

Hi AthenaandGary. The best advice you will get is live like a Cypriot in Cyprus. I've seen so many people come over from the UK trying to live like they did in the UK, comparing Cyprus to the UK and end up spunking all their money away on nothing before going back to the UK.

For shipping things over, I used Mondial who are based in Brimsdown (Enfield) and they were extremly cheap with a good service.

no greek very little hope of a job in either your occupation or your husbands. With family here you may find it easier(if they are Cypriots) but otherwise dont sell up in the UK until you have given it a chance. We did and now are back in UK and trying to sell our property in Cyprus, but owing to the credit crunch etc no chance yet.It is a lovely place to live but as we found out,you need money in order to really enjoy life and cover your costs.

I am not so sure about the language requirement. If you want to work to work as a receptionist then Greek is a must (although perhaps with a name like Athena she is a Greek speaker). On the other hand, I bet if you go around the industrial estates of Limassol you will find plenty of Bulgarian, Romanian and Polish forklift operators who do not speak a word of Greek. For a Bulgarian, coming from a country with mass unemployment where the minimum wage is about 120 euro per month, 500 euro per month in Cyprus is an attractive deal. I don't think it is for someone coming from the UK.
