Remind me again why I live in London.................

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Postby JimB » Mon Nov 02, 2009 5:03 pm

Your not comparing like with like - simple as that.

If you want access to an enormous selection of world class restaurants, theatres, museums, night life, shopping and more then London's a good place to be.

If you want the opportunity to work for some of the worlds biggest and most successful companies in an environment where you can really demonstrate your worth and where you can expect to be rewarded handsomely for it then London's a good place to be.

If you want to able to fly direct to nearly any place on the planet then London's a good place to be.

If you want to top up your tan and drink Keo then London's not a good place to be ......

As far as living / working in Cyprus is concerned then you need to look at what you want / need and hope to gain from moving here.

If your the boss, who cares if you speak Greek? Hire somebody to do it for you.

If your skills are in high demand / highly specialised then I doubt you will need to speak Greek and you can also expect to be well paid.

If you fit into neither category think long and hard about it, a crap job is a crap job and when the thermometer hits 40 it'll feel even crappier.

Oakwood is nice i agree, but a few miles to the south and you are in edmonton, tottenham, enfield (east of the a-10) and all the other hellholes full of chavs, somalis, junkies etc etc

house prices are high in cyprus (coming down now - bubble has burst, even Svetlana admits it!) but you can still get cheap land 20-30 minutes outside of town and build a nice house with a pool where you can relax and your kids can play. for the same money in London you can get a little terraced house in a bad or at best a so-so area.

There are many good jobs here, 80% of them in limassol or nicosia but u gotta speak greek and be willing to work hard. not good for many brits, they are too used to benefits !

the heat here is only bad july and august, but the weather is mostly bad in the UK year round. i actually quite like the heat.

England is horrible and I am glad I left it. It was once a great country but it has now become a pseudo-facist PC dystopian nightmare state, soulless and devoid of any culture or morality

STOP PROCASTINATING!!

If you wake up every morning wishing it was sunny and go to the beach after work then get get over here.

Once youve made your first step you wont go back.!! BUT YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE FIRST STEP ...the second will come naturally...

life is not all about money....

Hmmmm, the best post so far.!!!

I do speak Greek, I do even have a small place there on Dhekelia Road and even a little Jeep. I guess I'm just nervous as I worry that I'll hate it and then find it impossible to come back (job and home etc) where I left off.

I dont have kids yet but I plan to soon and Cyprus seems like a much nicer option to raise kids. The ideal scenario would be to come and go as I please but with work and kids I doubt that will be more than 3 weeks a year. So its decision time now.

I hope I dont offend with what I am about to say, but I think my biggest gripe will be dealing with the people. Not saying they bad but the mentality is different, especially in business, professionalism and urgency etc.

well unless you are not planning to retire, its just the same, you still have to work and pay bills.

Indeed why Cyprus, coming from baby who has 4 villas here, 3 boats, 6 businesses, is highly charged motivate, strong indepenant woman.

No, better go to pakistan, may be cheaper there.

Anyway all that aside, Cy prus is not for everyone, you get out what you put in. There are a number of things you have to learn to accept. If you just keep comparing it to the UK you'll go nuts and won't be happy.

You have already got a big head start, you speak greek, you have accommodation and transport and no kids, so any move will be much, much easier.

try it for a year, if you can hack it, stay, if not, you can go back. Don't burn your bridges just yet, but you must have cash to see you through without financial stress in that first year. If you are not in Cyp, you cannot intergrate and you will always wonder. To really find out if it is for you, you need to bite the bullet and take that first leap. Trust your heart.

Peoples perceptions and expectations are all different about living in Cyp, only you can know if it is for you or not.

Job wise, depends on what you do, but there is work out there if you care to look and have the necessary skilss, again only you can know this.

Whatever you decide, good luck to you and I hope it all works out for you.

Oh, and yes it is a great place to raise a family, but not cheap!

Cheers
