Branding is the problem. Pet owners see imported food endorsed by breeders, nicely packaged and conforming to EU standards and want the same. Price in alot of cases is not the issue but supply is. Maybe there is an opening in the market for somebody to fill ?

We import all 3 brands since October 2010. If you need information, call Sevag 99824787 or email us on [email protected]

We have priced Orijen and Artemis Holistic cheaper than anywhere in Europe

Oracles post seems to make perfect sense to me. What exactly is wrong with the locally produced dog foods ?

We've had dogs in Cyprus for over twenty years now and they have all enjoyed long healthy lives. They have all been fed on locally produced feed.

We've had one or two vets who have told us that the local stuff is no good....and then promptly tried to talk us into buying imported stuff which they just happen to be selling...at about six times the cost.

I have a Labrador - We started feeding him with Beto Kronen. Now he is on Royal Canin- cost about Euro 60 / month.

What are the local alternatives, apart from scraps?

We don't have much the way of scraps to feed him the Oracle way.

As I'm an honourable person ( despite what others may say) I'll honour my confidentiality agreement with a Major International petfood manufacturer.

The basic overview - a significant installation to analyse all aspects of dog metabolism and dietary efficiency ( my part of the project involved respiration and , of all things, flatulence !!! )

Anywayyyyy ..... cut to the chase

Give your dog a varied diet with meat ( both fresh and tinned) , bones (not chicken or fish),some mixer ( approx 15%) scraps ( max approx 10% of diet) .... avoid processsed carb rich foods and especially avoid onions, grapes, raisins, chocolate and coffee all of which have serious health issues for dogs.

Be aware that there is little regulation regarding the actual empirical data and results that don't suit the manufacturer "get lost" in the process.

My 13 year old Staffie is still thriving on this diet as is my 7 year old staffie..... my previous dog went to 16 years old - the breed average is 10-11 years old

The food our Golden Retrievers have always been on is manufactured by G. Tsappis. Their factory is east of Larnaca at a place called Akhna.

Their dog food goes under the general heading of Champion. They produce food for pups, less active dogs, working dogs etc. Their products seem to be generally available throughout Cyprus in supermarkets, pet shops, vets etc.

When we first came to Cyprus, 22 years ago, we fed our dogs on Bento or similar, but the suppliers kept running out of stock so we tried the Champion products and have not looked back.

In fact one of our Goldens won the "Male Best of Breed" section at the Nicosia Kennel Club Show.

I refer you to Oracles reply on page one, the lady is talking sense.

Can only speak as I find.

Speaking of scavengers.. I have a Red Eard Slider (water turtle), omnivorous that will eat EVERYTHING.

KFC(including the bones), hot dogs, hamburger, fruits, veg, worms, spiders, sweet corn, centipedes, ham, shrimp, prawns, sausage, live fish... people(got bit bad once- had to pop into clinic for a shot)

Here's my 2 terrors. The little one (Hercules) got murdered by the bigger one (ET) a few months ago.
