Civilians should never salute!

When a soldier salutes what he is actually saluting is the flag/emblem on his hat/beret and not whatever is in front of them! So, if you’re not wearing a military hat what on earth could you possibly be saluting? :?

A soldier in civilian attire may salute with his index finger to the temple, but civilians should simply stand attention and/or place their hand across their heart when saluting the flag.

A civilian saluting militarily is nothing short of mockery to the armed forces and you’d think the president of the US would know that…

Barack Obama is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces as well as President of the US, and this is why the services will salute him.

We're not talking about who salutes him but his tendency to salute back which he shouldn’t be doing! Not even a Minister of Defense may salute as he is a civilian.

Perhaps you could post the interesting military regulation as a credible link for us to read, or did you just make that up??

I often wonder how people just dream up this stuff going about their every day lives.

Unless you are just trying to put down good old Obama then what drives you to dig this stuff out?

Fascinating, I should have been a psychologist!

Different armed forces - different customs.

It has always been my understanding that US servicemen do salute without hats - if not, a hundred Hollywood films have got it wrong. As Commander-in-Chief, I think it is probably correct that Obama salutes the flag or whatever.

Saluting by raising the hand to the forehead originated from the days when helmets with visors were worn and the soldier had to raise his visor when addressing a superior or to be recognised (I have this on good authority from a young history buff :D ).

Habits and customs change becoming mere symbolic gestures of what they once were. So, if it's considered polite to salute, why not?

I have always been under the understanding civilians do not salute. Members of armed forces also genrally do not salute unless wearing head gear. Saluting military vehicles bearing the station commanders flag is also another where a salute is required.
I never like to see a sloppy salute, it is a mark of respect and should be presented in a sharp movement with a flat hand.
