Cyprus has been defined as the area of production for Hellim

Postby halil » Fri Oct 30, 2009 4:01 pm

Cyprus has been defined as the area of production for Hellim.
The Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry’s application to Turkey’s Patent Institute to register hellim as the unique product of the island of Cyprus, has been accepted.

The Turkish Patent Institute’s decision concerning the issue is being published in Turkey’s official gazette.

All concerned will be able to object to the TPI’s decision within 6 months from the day of publication of the decision in the official gazette.
If no objections are made, the registration will gain certainty.

According to the decision of the Institute, hellim production, including the milk production and the packaging processes, may be completed on the island of Cyprus but, that, the inspection and supervision of all processes involved should be carried out only in the TRNC.

Halloumi or haloumi (Greek χαλούμι, Turkish hellim, Arabic حلوم ḥallūm) is a Traditional Cypriot cheese

Halloumi cheese originated in Cyprus[5][8][9][10] and was initially made during the Medieval Byzantine period[11], subsequently gaining popularity throughout the Middle-East

Not necessarily. They will probably do what they did in RoC when fetta was defined as a Greek product, just change the name. I was buying the Pittas variety for ages before I realised it is now called ΠΕΤΤΑ!
