The only thing that would truly shock me is if the Turks decided to negotiate in good faith. Or announced something constructive. Anything else is likely to be more of the usual Turkish bullshit.

If the Turkish leadership had half a brain cell between them they would unconditionallly hand back Varosha. This would put the ROC on the back foot, the EU would , no doubt, expect the GCs to offer concessions in return such as allowing Ercan to operate freely.

Unfortunately the Turks know only one democratic tool - brute force. Traditional democratic means are beyond their powers of comprehension.

TCs and Turks r 100% sure of that anything less than 3Rs r not satisfactory for GCs and Greeks... Give them Varosha back and watch them asking the 3Rs with a gift on top of all: minority status for TC community.

I'm still waiting for the "shocking ideas" to emerge from this "summit". Oh wait, Talat has flown home with the stunning news that talks will go on into 2010...

Consider me shocked.

Unfortunately, brain cells are in short supply amongst the Turkish leadership. This is a country that begged to start the EU accession process and has only managed to succeed in getting several negotiating chapters frozen, alienate the rest of Europe and made itself appear untrustworthy, arrogant and offensive. A more incompetent and useless leadership it's not possible to imagine. I suppose a country gets the leaders its deserves but the Turks have surpassed themselves with this miserable bunch of reprobates.

What concerns me even more is the fact that they are getting away with it scot free.

Had it been Iran, Iraq, Afganistan that had behaived like this the west would sure have bombed them by now. Where are the sanctions???? Why are they still trading freely with the Turks?? It is about time the EU took a more responible stance, cancel the customs union, impose immediate sanctions, embargeo these criminals and bring them to book.

Alas, the US/UK et al seem to like the taste of Turkish shit as the arse kissing never ceases.

Don't expect anything radical, knowing the Turks they will probably be asking for additional land to accomodate their million settlers.

The summary of the summit published on the below website:

http://www.kibrispostasi.com/index.php/ ... ame/KIBRIS

A Turkish-English speaker may translate it in English for non-turkish speaking forumers.

"Trusted sources" reported that, the summit focused on a 6 step common TC-Turkish strategy against the GC-Greek political stance regarding the solution of Cyprus problem and a "B" plan in case talks fail to bring an agreed solution.

TALAT AND GUL REITERATED THEIR SUPPORT TO AN EARLY SOLUTION IN CYPRUS

The President of the TRNC Mehmet Ali Talat and Turkish President Abdullah Gul has stressed the need to set a timetable for the Cyprus negotiation process in order to bring an early solution to the Cyprus problem.

Reiterating their support to the continuing peace process on the island, the two presidents said that the Turkish Side would continue work towards a settlement.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Ankara, Talat and Gul also underlined the need to bring a solution to the problem within the framework of the UN parameters which envisage the establishment of a new partnership on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal order and political equality.

The first to speak at the press conference was Turkish President Gül who said that the Turkish Side proved its support towards a solution in 2004 by backing a UN peace plan.

Reiterating Ankara’s full support to President Talat who has been conducting the negotiation process, Mr Gül stressed that open-ended talks cannot be continued forever and underlined the need to set a timetable for the talks.

Repeating Turkey’s support to an early solution in Cyprus, he said the problem must be solved in a not so distant future.

Referring to statements issued by Greek Cypriot leaders that the aim of the talks is to evolve the so-called Republic of Cyprus, he said such claims were unacceptable, noting that the Turkish Cypriots status cannot be lowered to that of a minority.

President Talat, for his part, pointed out that the TC Side had done its best to make it possible to bring a solution to the Cyprus problem by the end of the year.

But, he complained that the GC side which he said, wanted to use Turkey’s EU membership process for its own interests, had been hampering the process in order to bring a pro-Greek Cypriot solution to the Cyprus problem.

Explaining that the two sides determined their differences in the first round of the talks, he said that the sides are now trying to bridge the gap between their positions on these issues in the second round.

Stressing that cooperation between the TRNC and Turkey would continue, the President thanked his Turkish president for his country’s strong support to the TC People.

Noting that the TC Side would continue its efforts towards bringing a solution to the Cyprus problem, Mr Talat said a future agreement should be based on UN parameters and should prevent a return to the conditions that existed before 1974.

SERDAR DENKTAS SAYS FURTHER FLEXIBILITY WILL BRING A BREAKDOWN

The Leader of the Democrat Party Serdar Denktas has expressed the view that the Turkish side has already shown maximum flexibility at the Cyprus peace negotiations and warned that further flexibility would bring a breakdown.
‘There can’t be a going backwards from the provisions envisaged in the Annan Plan, on the issues of property, governance and citizenship’ Denktas told Bayrak Television.

The DP Leader said he got the impression after his meetings with foreign diplomats that a foreign resolution plan might be brought to the table.
