A SERIES of parcel bombs in Greece has sparked fears that local militants could link up with Al Qaeda.

Explosive devices were sent last week to embassies in Athens, and to international organisations and foreign leaders, including Germany’s Angela Merkel and Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi.

Dr Athanasios Drougos, a counter terrorism expert in Athens, said: “This is the first time that domestic Greek terrorists have internationalised their action. That marks a dramatic escalation of their approach to sowing terror.

“There is a real fear that because they have common targets we may see Greek extremists team up with Islamic fundamentalists.”
