VLADIKAVKAZ, Russia — Flags flew at half-staff in the southern Russian city of Vladikavkaz on Friday and stunned residents laid flowers in a square where a suicide car bombing killed 17 people and wounded more than 140.

Thursday's bombing near the central market of the capital of the North Ossetia republic was the most serious attack in Russia since the March subway bombings in Moscow that killed 40 people.

Police have arrested five suspected Islamist terrorists planning to assassinate the Pope.

LONDON, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Intelligence agencies in European and American countries have jointly intercepted a terror plot to launch Mumbai-style attacks on Britain and other European countries, according to a report by Sky News on Tuesday.

The Sky report said intelligence sources told Sky that militants based in Pakistan were planning simultaneous strikes on London and major cities in France and Germany, which would have been similar to the commando-style raids carried out in Mumbai, India in November 2008. The Mumbai incident killed 166 people in a series of gun and grenade attacks.

The plan was in the advanced but not imminent stage, the sources said. The plotters had been tracked by spy agencies "for some time" and the European plot had been "severely disrupted" following intelligence sharing between Britain, France, Germany and the United States.

News of the planned strikes came as the Eiffel Tower in Paris was evacuated because of a bomb scare for the second time in two weeks.

When the terror plan came to light, the U.S. military began helping its European allies by trying to kill the leaders behind the plot in Pakistan's Waziristan region, the report said.
