Indonesia invaded East Timor in 1976. They occupied it up until 1999, when all of a sudden some countries simply decided to intervene in East Timor against pro Indonesian Militias.
In case you don't know, Indonesia has a population of some 240 million people. So why did these countries decide to intervene in East Timor?
Australia led INTERFET because Jose-Ramos Horta (a politician which can never be compared to the likes of any in Cyprus) knew that his country had rich Oil and Gas reserves within its would be EEZ, and knew exactly what buttons to push in Canberra, which led to other allies also pitching in to assist Australia as payback for Iraq 1 - Desert Storm.
It is as simple as that. Oil and Gas drive our economies, and Cyprus could achieve many things with these Oil and Gas reserves especially as deposits dwindle around the world.
Some countries WILL take drastic action for Oil and Gas, as those deposits can drive their Oil dependant economies for another 5-10 years or more.
But do Cypriot politicians have the guts? Can they think outside of the box? Can anyone step up and lead Cyprus with statesmanship just like Jose Ramos Horta in East Timor? I think not....
