Baghdatis shines in Stockholm Open

Postby Lit » Mon Oct 26, 2009 8:19 am

Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus registered a 6-1 7-5 victory over Belgium's Oliver Rochus at the If Stockholm Open on Sunday to win his first ATP title since February 2007.

"I played really well in the first set," said Baghdatis.

"It was important to get a good start, but then in the second set Olivier stepped it up. I was a bit lucky to win in two sets in the end. I wanted to win this so badly. It was my chance to win another title and I managed to find the solution to win."

In the first set Baghdatis steam rolled against Rochus, broke him twice in the set and closed it 6-1. In the second set both the players traded early exchanges of serve till Baghdatis broke for the third time to lead 6-5 and then served for the victory.

"It's been a long time since I won an ATP tournament," Baghdatis said.

"The last one was in Febuary 2007. I'm so happy right now. It's been a tough couple of years and this title came when I least expected it, so it's even better."

"My serve didn't work as well as it had done earlier in the week today," admitted Rochus. "I had a few too many double faults and had a lower first serve pecentage, which cost me a lot."
