Heavy rain and floods have caused disasters in many parts of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.The rain which continued through the day yesterday led to severe flooding in Guzelyurt(Morpho), the region hardest hit by the rains.Many houses, shops, roads and cars were flooded.
It’s been announced that all necessary measures would be taken to get the life in the region back to normal. Life in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was hit with rain water flooding the roads, houses and shops in many areas.
Bostanci and the Guzelyurt City Centre(Morpho) were flooded.
Rain water also caused severe damage in Akcay. The bridge on the Yilmazkoy-Kilicaslan road collapsed by the rains.
Traffic jams were witnesses at several points in major cities as from early hours of the morning.
Some factories in the North Nicosia Industrial Area were flooded by the rains.
Intense efforts are underway to pump water from roads, houses and shops.
Police, fire brigades, soldiers, teams from municipalities and civil defense organisation units are working round the clock in the areas hit by the floods.
Teams from the municipalities also issued warnings to people in low areas to move to higher ground.
Many residents in Bostanci and Guzelyurt – who were trapped at their homes – were saved by rescue teams.
President Mehmet Ali Talat, Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu, Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun, the Minister of Interior and Local Administrations Ilkay Kamil, the Minister of Agriculture and Natural resources Nazim Cavusoglu, the Minister of National Education, Youth and Sports Kemal Durust, the Minister of Public Works and Communications Hasan Tacoy and the Minister of Labor and Social Welfare Turkay Tokel and the Minister of Health Ahmet Kasif had inspections in the Guzelyurt district in the early hours of the morning.
Meanwhile, a crisis desk has been established under the chairmanship of the Minister of Interior and Local Administrations to coordinate the rescue efforts.
A special meeting has also been held with the participation of President Talat, Prime Minister Eroglu, ministers and some deputies to make an evaluation of the severe damage caused by the floods.
President Talat pointed out that Guzelyurt was the hardest hit region by the floods and said all the necessary measures would be taken to heal the wounds of the people in the region.
