May I means i would like your permission, can i might mean am i capable of doing this, it's actually the same in some way but it can still mean two totally different things depending on the way it's used in the sentence!

Sorry, just being pedantic :wink: though I was always taught the following;

Can I? - am I able (physically and/or mentally) to carry out whatever activity etc?

May I? - am I allowed/permitted to carry out the activity etc?
