Police purge is a ‘road of no return’
POLICE have forced an officer to resign after he stole around €67,000 received as evidence in a drugs related case, it was announced yesterday.
The officer, whose identity has not been made public, admitted guilt to three charges: improper conduct, dereliction of duty and conduct unbecoming a police officer.
A police statement said the officer had been forced to resign.
The officer stole €67,170 which had been confiscated as evidence in a drugs trafficking case in Larnaca in 2008.
It was the second dismissal of a police officer in the past ten days.
“This is a tangible example that anyone putting themselves outside the boundaries of their duty has no place in the force,” police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos told the Cyprus Mail.
He added that the police leadership was committed to cleanse the force.
“It is a road of no return,” Katsounotos said.
Thirteen members of the force have been sacked or forced to resign in the past five years, the police said.
On Thursday a police inspector was suspended after he was allegedly caught red-handed playing cards at a Nicosia coffee shop while on duty.
Police have found themselves on the receiving end of a lot of criticism recently over their handling of numerous issues.
Today, the force is holding a mini charm offensive at the Mall of Cyprus from 11am to 3pm titled “Together with the police for a safer society”. The event is part of the force’s outreach programme towards the public, and particularly the youth. The event will be broadcast live by Klik FM. A number of presents will be handed out to youngsters at the event while the police leadership will also make a show at 11.30pm, where the police chief will speak on Klik FM.
