Potatoes
Yep, simple batates!
Aren't all CYs proud of their potatoes? Never missing a chance to tell us of the virtues of the greatest potato on Earth? ... and you know something? They're quite right.
Rare that a nation can take such enormous National Pride in such a simple bit of farm produce.
Absolutely delightfully soft and tasty in CY especially when cooked and served with such dishes as kleftico and tavva.
CY potatoes also make brilliant fried chips.
Grown, in the main, as you will all know, in the Kokkinochoria (Red Soil Villages) area over in the south-east. The nearest equivalent that I know of here in GB is the red-skinned Desiree potato so again this Red word crops up.
Why Red? Iron !!, my brothers and sisters. I'm no farmer (and can't even stand gardening), but such a vital mineral in productive farming areas. The red colour of iron rust seems to be the common factor here.
