A story told in Kophinou and repeated through generations.
It was at a time when people believed in Djins, ghosts/ HAYALET, HEYULA, all kinds of evil spirits. You name it they had it.
Needless to say that most of these apparitions congrgated around the cemetary. The old Turkish cemetary is still there opposite the police station in Kophinou.
The locals were chatting away in the local coffee shop. It had been a busy day in the fields. The men waiting for supper to be prepared, were drinking their Turkish coffee and playing tavli with their eyes occasionally looking up the road waiting for a child to bring the news that food was ready.
The subject at the cafenion turned to ghosts. Some believed in them whilst some did not. The educated 'imam' was of the opinion that 'ghosts' or such things did not in fact exist.
Others swore to the fact that they had seen so-and-sos ghost in the cemetary wandering among the gravestones.
The 'imam' decided to prove that this was not true so took the villagers to task. He laid on a bet that he would tether his donkey in the middle of the cemetary that night and he would return unharmed the next day.
The next day there was no sign of the 'imam'. People were asking around if anybody had seen him. One of them even went to his house to ask his wife. She too had not seen him.
His friends began to get worried. Some said the Djins had got him, some said he was killed by some evil ghost.
What happened?
