Cyprus dialect banned on Turkish Cypriot TV

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE 19.OCT.09
The so-called Higher Broadcasting Council (HBC), a governing body which regulates electronic media in the occupied areas, has been blasted after it decided to forbid the use of the Turkish Cypriot dialect on TV and radio.

The directive, which has been described as “shameful” by most popular politicians in the north, is now being actively enforced on broadcasting stations.

The HBC is now carrying out an ‘inspection of 15 TV channels and 23 radio stations to make sure Turkish Cypriot dialect is not transmitted and the ‘Turkish language is properly used.’

The chairmen of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Democratic Party (DP) and Communal Democracy Party (TDP), Ferdi Sabit Soyer, Serdar Denktas and Mehmet Cakici respectively criticized the decision.

Mr Soyer accused the National Unity Party (UBP) self-styled government of trying to rule by using oppression.

“You are a government which dictates even how people will talk”, said Soyer.

Denktash said that they will turn the Turkish Cypriots into the only people in history which is ashamed of the way it speaks.

Mr Cakici noted that the decision is a policy of annihilating the Turkish Cypriot culture.

By the way, this was a recommendation rather than a prohibition on the part of the Supreme Broadcasting Board.

The first step of next phase will be disallowing the imbeciles occupying significant posts in government offices. The secend step will be encouraging other imbeciles to research abt the issues before accepting them true. :D

You mean our ultimate demise has been postponed. You are not such a nice man. Rafaella will now be going into deep depression having read your post. I hope you realise the effect you are having on some of our more extreme elements on this forum.

In any case this so called supreme broadcasting board is only applying to the north what has been applied to the south since 1960. Is there any GC element left on the GC broadcasting?

I am not sure what you mean by lies. The discussion is about part of a statement made by the Supreme Broadcasting Board which can be found on the Board’s own website:

http://www.kktcyyk.org/index.php/basn-b ... -uyar-yazs

(Fourth paragraph)

It is a fact that the above statement was issued. The precise interpretation of this statement may be up to debate. As I have said elsewhere, I think this was an example of what in politics is known as ‘flying a kite’ (see the following for a detailed definition and discussion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_a_kite_(politics) )

It is significant that, following the uproar which this announcement provoked, Eroğlu immediately distanced himself from the proposal. If my thesis above is correct, this suggests that it will be some time, if ever, before moves are made to officially restrict the use of the TC dialect in the Turkish Cypriot media.
