Cyprus dialect banned on Turkish Cypriot TV

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Tim Drayton » Tue Oct 20, 2009 1:03 pm

From page 128 of volume 10 of Rauf Denktash's memoirs (thanks to YFreddo's childhood mate for including it in one of his books):

One day I was in Limnitis. I noticed an old man in the coffee house who remained silent and did not answer my questions. I asked if he was deaf. It seemed that because he did not speak Turkish he had been fined several times and now when strangers came he sat in silence without talking.

(My translation)

There was nothing so-called about this ban; Denktash himself speaks of it in his memoirs.

Wasn't Denktash one of the TMT executive in those days? Why he was surprised by seeing a man in silence? Was Denktash a stranger to him? Don't tell me that Denktash didn't know the so-called banning of speaking in Greek.

Yes, the news on CYBC is read in standard Greek, just as the news in Turkish is read in standard Turkish, and just like the TV news in the north is also read in the standard language. However, there are plenty of programmes on CYBC which are in the Cypriot dialect.

For example, at the following page:

http://www.cybc.com.cy/index.php?option ... Itemid=105

you can find past broadcasts of a comedy show called "Πατάτες Αντιναχτές" which I believe is mainly in dialect.

Tim, BRT too has a plenty of programs in TC dialect. Almost all programs prepared and presented by TCs r in TC dialect... Only the news bulletins r presented with Istanbul dialect. Even TCs who present news at TV and radio station can't present news with a pure Istanbul dialect. A TC and a native Istanbul inhabitant can easily distinguish whether the speaker is TC or someone from one of the western cities of Turkey.

One thing is the natural process that happens everywhere, and another is banning TCs to speak Greek, or ban the TC dialect from TV.

What abt systematic re-hellenization of GCs after the Greek independence war? U again r mixing ur nuts with our pirillis. During the spread of nationalism movement almost all ethnic groups on this planet earth did this or that to get rid of previously imposed and/or alienated elements in their ethnic group... Moreover u r still trying to distort the truth regarding the so-called banning TCs to speak Greek and recommendation to TC mass media avoid corrupting TC dialect.

Insan he is very funny .... why he doesn't tell us that they don't used Cypriot Greek dialect while they give news from PIK or other TV channels ...
how funny for a person that he can not stand with our TC excistance in this island and he worries about our TC dialect .

Their the one who are banned the one of the official language of Cyprus which one of them was Turkish and it was for us . Now if u don't speak greek u can not work at goverment or apply for any job .

There is a daily news programme in Turkish on RIK.

A large number of grissy students are learning Turkish in over-subscribed courses in the Universities of the Free Areas.

They don't tell you this do they Bay crap?

I do not think he would say that about Richmond-on-Thames.
