Protest over Orthodox/Catholic dialogue

MEMBERS of Orthodox Christian unions along with clerics and monks yesterday disrupted a Paphos conference between Orthodox and Catholic Christians.

The unions, monks from Stavrovouni monastery and Larnaca clerics were protesting against the conference and demanding that Archbichop Chrysostomos II cancel it.

It was day one of the conference of the Joint Commission for the Theological Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church.

The protesters claimed the dialogue between the two churches aimed in the submission of the Orthodox Church to the Pope.

The archbishop expressed his displeasure at the protest and asked the participants to visit him on Monday.

The Joint Commission is made up of representatives of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches and aims in restoring communion between them.

The two churches split in the 11th century in what became known as the Great Schism.

The protest caused the cancellation of the programme.

Paphos Bishop Georgios said everyone stresses that “there are differences, there are serious differences; a thousand years of division have increased our differences.”

“But times today necessitate reconciliation, despite our Churches going through hate and animosity, today we understand that we need to cooperate,” Georgios said.

The conference, which is held at the Saint George hotel, takes place every two years.

It ends on October 23.

I know what seperates them but I'm not sure what urges them to cooperate against whom... :? Any ideas?

Thank God that in this day and age they are not strapping explosives onto themselves and going into each others places of worship and blowing themselves up.

Unlike the Sunnis and Shias.

Satan?

I don't think so but if u put forth some rational arguements that the existence of Satan was the reason urges them to cooperate, maybe I could believe it was. :? Or I'd better do some google search abt the manifestation of Catholic-Orthodox unity... :?

Listen little conspiracy theorist ... there is no rational argument that God exists. So, why should there be one for Satan's existence? Religions (like Kemalism) are NOT based on "rational argument" but fanaticism and faith and the belief that humans (or Turks) are better than "lower" animals (or non-Turks).

Where is this "rapidly increasing Islamic population"? You seem to inhabit your own little fantasy world full of Turkish tribes holding hands and gallivanting throughout the plains of the world, whilst praising Allah

Christianity is still the largest world religion and growing even as we speak thanks to those 1 billion Chinese who (unlike you) embrace the Occidental life values and are flocking to convert. Add to that the Buddhists, Hindus and Sikhs, whose beliefs are more sympathetic with Christianity than Islam, and you are a dwindling, unattractive, fading practice ... with a high birth rate but also the highest death rate, due to your unshakable "poverty".

Muslim Population Statistics
Demographic considerations with regard to Muslim populations may prove to be of vital concern in the next millennium. When a large percentage of the population is older, this can affect the socio-political structure of a country. Likewise, when a large percentage of the population is young, that too will affect the socio-political structure of a country.
Here are some population statistics starting from the early 1900s as well as projected figures for the year 2025 of the total overall number of Muslims across the globe.

Comparative chart - number of Muslims to Christians:

Christian Muslim
1900 world population 26.9% 12.4%
1980 world population 30% 16.5%
2000 world population 29.9% 19.2%
2025 world population (PROJECTED) 25% 30%

Islam is growing about 2.9% per year which is faster than the total world population which increases at about 2.3% annually. It is thus attracting a progressively larger percentage of the world's population.

North America and Europe have increasingly aging populations and one of the most disturbing social issues of the new millennium will concern a more efficient means of disposing of the elderly.
