Sorry to be a spotty anorak, but Sri Lankan Tamils originated from the Indian State of Tamil Nadu.

Student attempts to fly with stolen passport
By Patrick Dewhurst

A SRI Lankan Student was yesterday arrested at Larnaca airport after trying to fly to Paris with a stolen passport.

The plucky student presented a German passport to the duty officer, who said yesterday that the passport photo was of a blond German.

When the officer asked the student where he would like to go, he answered simply "Auf Wiedersehen" (“Goodbye” in German)

Larnaca CID arrested the student for forgery and unlawful impersonation. According to a Larnaca News Agency report, he had paid €5,000 for the passport.

A spokesperson for Larnaca CID said that the student was remanded in custody for four days, before going to Larnaca District Court on Monday. "If he is found guilty, then he will be sentenced to between four and eight months in prison. After that he will go back to his country." The spokesperson added that passport infringements such as this were a weekly occurrence."

Many of the local Sri Lankans are preparing vast quantaties of food; I shall donate 50 bottles of water and take my video camera. So, no parking near Cyta Park, tomorrow!

Some pictures:

Friends preparing various vegetarian curries, served with dall and rice, then wrapped in softened banana leaves.

A Buddha is carried along, preceeded by traditional drummers, with white sheets being laid on the ground in front of them, followed by girls carrying flowers and gifts of food. Crowds formed on both sides, chanting prayers - it was very dramatic. Everyone dressed in the white of innocence.

It was quite a sight and because Sri Lankan 'girls' tend to be of similar height, hair style and skin colouring - varying only in slimness (or the lack of it) it looked like they were cloned!

I do not recognise the flag.
