Used to work at the only rock/metal bar in paphos but that went down really fast because people simply wouldn't show up. I used to bitch and whine about not having a place to go and that if we did have something people would fill it up every night. Worked as a DJ there, we only got it full when Rock FM had it's crappy Disco Nights playing George Michael and the Jackson 5. Sigh. I lost hope of ever finding people who like the same music so yeah, maybe i get lucky here :)

What kind of music tickles your fancy CF people?

i went to RockNest before it changed to Figaro - music was mostly guitar based popular alternative rock which i enjoyed, sound system was excellent, venue was (too) fancy and drinks were expensive (for me) so i chose to not go back as i like a few beers when i`m rocking out. I really don't need leather chairs and such a well groomed venue ... the grittier the better for 'this type' of night out. I played guitar in a heavy rock/metal/grunge/punk band for a few years and would certainly enjoy some heavy riffage in Paphos. There was a band from Larnaca (i think) playing in Paphos harbour in an event during the summer - was tasty.

Kangarooster, if you don't like the current state of affairs then head around the bars in the area asking if they fancy doing a 'rock' or 'metal' night, most bars will just be interested in selling drinks so if you can bring them a crowd once a week/month then they will probably be very happy to do something different.

Of course when you do your own thing you will get people trying to put it down before it has started about the clientel, the venue, the town, the music blah blah blah ... being 'alternative' is financially risky which is probably why 'bar street' is mostly the same sort of shit day in day out, but if no-one tries something different mediocrity reigns.

Risky is the wrong word. More like impossible. People are afraid of change so a rock/metal bar wont work. We (Paphos) are the only city in Cyprus without any kind or form of rock/metal bar. Everywhere else people learned to live in harmony and accept that other people like this kind of music NOT in paphos. I played alternative cheesy pop rock (my boss made me play that shit) and people would still complain it's too heavy. I got complaints about Coldplay for God's sake!

At this stage a 'dedicated' bar may not work, but irregular events might. Get all the rockers and/or metalheads into one 'virtual' space to arrange the nights and go from there. There are PLENTY about in Paphos, i have met loads of people that like guitar music of varying strengths all say the same thing - no venue.

Still. I can bet money that it will not work. We had organized nights for EVERY SINGLE kind of rock/metal taste. We had classic rock days, live days, metal days, alternative days, we had pop rock/disco days, you name it, people just would NOT come. The saddest part was the Metal/hard rock nights. So so many people i've met that claim to be metalheads and cry about not having somewhere to go to listen to their "oh so beloved" metal music, NONE of them EVER came. If people just wanna go to some dump and listen to their favorite tracks over and over while having a free drink well that's not gonna happen. I would be MORE than happy to DJ for any bar that wants to organize something like this. Something tells me if i got the chance to play anywhere in bar street UNINTERUPTED and WITHOUT requests i'm sure i would move some heads :)

I would attend a few 'events' a year at least but aside from the aforementioned RockFM parties i never heard of another evening of modern rock (or metal). So if you were doing them over the last 3 years then the marketing message wasn't getting through to all the people that would come to all the events you did !

You may 'poo poo' people wanting a free drink but the cost of drinks is an issue for many people. €4 for a small local beer in RockNest vs €3 for a large bottle in a bar in another bar in Paphos, already people that drink beer will be thinking about whether to go their or not, whether they love the music or not.

Also talking about a 'dump' may be a bit harsh but in contrast RockNest was really well finished, that level of 'sophistication' doesn't attract what i would expect to be a 'casual rock crowd', more the 'smart be seen' crowd.

Just my opinion but an 'easygoing' venue with competitive drink prices (NOT the get a free shot, fishbowl or buy one get one free) may, slowly slowly, get a regular rock crowd together, its just whether the economics of waiting the months/years for that crowd to establish is something a bar owner is willing to handle.
