Does the government take into consideration the number of scheduled weddings per given year when calculating COLA? How much do you shove in the envelope? I usually put a 50 in, but if it's someone I know, or God forbid a relative, that could go up to 500!

COLA is the communist government's way of regulating employees pay. Cost of Living Allowance. It is a very old system and should be abolished. It was recently adjusted down cutting the salaries of most in Cyprus. It was in fact intended as a pun since the meat of the question is actually how much to you give at weddings. :)

COLA should be abolished, but new realistic and meaningful minimum wages limits should be set in its place.

The Cypriot Employers are taking the piss when it comes to pay. Nothing is cheap now in Cyp, but the wages have stayed at very low rates.

Young couples don't a rats chance in hell of making a go of it on the mickey mouse wages on offer and thats with both working.

I only go to weddings of very close relatives and very close friends and I give between 100 and 400. On average I never have to go to more than 1 wedding every year. I think this tradition in Cyprus to invite as much people as you can is stupid!

Let me tell you something.

It is no different to living here in the UK. Between my wage and my other halves wage we don't earn a bad number on paper but the outgoings are so bloody high - we dont save either. The cost of living is so expensive over here.

I earn more money than you but my outgoings are more than yours. Who is better off?? No-body!

It';s not just Cyprus it's also the UK too!

Here we go:

Council tax (this is a low band) £120 per month
Electricity £100 per month
TV licence - yes we have to bloody pay to watch our bloody TV in the UK! - £10 per month
Food/drink - £400 - 600 per week (for just 2 of us!)
Petrol - £200 per month
Water - £40 per month!! This is a bloody joke especially after the amount of rain we get!!!!!!!!

On top of that - mortgage, Sky, internet, phoneline, life insurance (for mortgage) and car.

Do you want to swap?
