Because carving up Cyprus in any configuration contravenes international law that protects her sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Don't be so bloody stupid......What agreements between the two people of Cyprus is going to challenge by anybody???

There are no agreements by the Cypriot people. All we’ve got so far are partitionistic suggestions!

If the Cyprus problem is not solved according to internationally accepted principles then there is always the probability that at some stage in future the conflict will re-occur. Why should Cyprus be different from other former colonies, where in the world is there an agreement that says one country can "legally" interfere in the affairs of a sovereign state? Why should Cyprus be punished in perpetuity because of the misdeeds of the former occupiers of the island? Turkey is hoping that the demographic changes it has made to the north and the presence of 40,000 troops will bias any agreement in its favour, such an agreement would leave many Cypriots with a bitter taste and an uncertain future.

Some interesting points...

The whole world is sick of the Cyprus problem and the games which the leaders of both sides have been playing from time to time to convince the U.N. and other mediators that the the other side, and not them is to blame for the situation! As Zan quite rightly wrote, everyone will breathe a sigh of relief and endorse any agreement Talat and Christophias come to and without saying it openly,Turkey has to play ball about re-negotiating the guarantees and troop withdrawal as without resolving these vital issues no solution can be implemented. But rather than accusations and public mud-slinging,far more can be achieved by using diplomatic, confidential negotiations and Papandreou made a very good move last week in that direction.....Erdogan has the political willpower to deal with the issues on Cyprus that involve Turkey and can persuade the military and public opinion there what benefits Turkey would get by agreeing to a settlement. However, neither side wants to lose face and appear to have capitulated to the demands of the other so this is why the problem can only be dealt with effectively 'in camera' and not by using popularist jargon and bravado, which Cyprus has heard far too much of over the decades.Far too much has been said and far too much harm done already, and some of the postings on this site from people on both sides are proof of that!
And to end with for now,I will re-iterate what I and many others have said before:more than a few Cypriots on both sides have become so used to the situation here since 1974 and would be quite happy if it stayed as it is,as long as there is plenty of souvla, fast cars and cabarets etc. but of course the truth is that the situation is not static,as so many naively believe, but is worsening every day against the possibility of a solution and the situation shown in todays Alithia about Ayios Amvrosios and how it is being developed is a perfect example!
It will be very sad if the Greek-Cypriots wake-up too late to see this reality, but as recent history here has shown us so many times, this might well be the case...Yet there are still people who refuse to see this reality, just like Stalin when he was warned Germany were planning to attack Russia, and preferred instead to condemn those who said it as traitors...

Tpap is quoted as saying : If we can't get the TCs to believe we are their safest option then all is lost...........This was in the 60's...

And 'Get Real' is the bloke who agrees with the late Papadoc that the best solution is the status-quo as the ideal solution is not available!
