SUPREME!!! Boradcastin Council!

So much talk and no one comments on the title of this thing? Supreme! Supreme over what? Are there other Broadcasting Councils below this Supreme one? How many?

Who dreams up these titles?

Lit wrote:All parties criticized the decision of the HBC to forbid the Turkish Cypriot dialect on the TV

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (09.10.09) reports that the political parties in the “assembly” discussed yesterday the announcement of the so-called Higher Broadcasting Council (HBC) which decided to forbid the use of the Turkish Cypriot dialect on the televisions. The chairmen of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Democratic Party (DP) and Communal Democracy Party (TDP), Ferdi Sabit Soyer, Serdar Denktas and Mehmet Cakici respectively criticized the decision.

Mr Soyer accused the National Unity Party (UBP) self-styled government of trying to rule by using oppression. “You are a government which dictates even how people will talk,” said Soyer. Mr Denktas addressing the UBP said that they will turn the Turkish Cypriots into “the only people in history” which is ashamed of the way it speaks. Mr Cakici noted that the decision is a policy of annihilating the Turkish Cypriot culture. The self-styled prime minister, Dervis Eroglu said that this decision might concern the TV speakers. He said he is proud of being a Cypriot and noted that he will never be ashamed of this. He said: “If you ask me this decision is wrong. In this country everybody speaks as he wishes.”
(I/Ts.)

Not quite true. It was a recommendation, not an official ban. In my view they were 'flying a kite', i.e. using this official body (which incidentally styles itself as the 'Supreme Broadcasting Board’ on its own website) as a channel through which to air a potentially controversial peice of legislation to see what kind of reaction it would provoke. It is clear from the way Eroglu distanced himself from this proposal that the time is not yet felt ripe to ratchet up 'cultural genocide' to this level.
